Silly geese - the redesign isn’t for the users, it’s for the investors, for the upcoming IPO. It’s like staging a house for sale. The point isn’t to make the house livable, it’s to make it desirable to buyers.

Serious question - How does the redesign make it desirable to potential investors?
It doesn't.
But it means they can pretend like the platform is still innovating and improving.
Investors want number go up, consistent development and a stable usercount is the same as flatlined and dead to these people.
Maybe an attempt to push more people to their app? Then they can harvest more user data which investors value.

It's really weird though, honestly.
I mean a lot of bad UI exists, but this is bad even from a bad UI perspective because it doesn't even do the things bad modern UI is usually known for. It's just... it's almost as if they asked an LLM to make a design, and this is pieced hacked together from learned designs with no understanding why each piece exists or does not exist in the design it was taken from.
For example it uses post-designs that are meant for wide displays, but in a narrow one. It uses dual-sidebars, but doesn't put them on the sides, it keeps extra whitespace on the outside even on normal formats. It tries to look mobile-ish, without recycling functional elements from the mobile layout, more just apeing its design.
It's bizarre.

I bet old.reddit is gonna be axed fairly soon. All signs point that way.
- Killing the free API access and thereby putting most 3rd party apps out of commission
- The expensive rebrand from pentagram
- Reddit all but officially announcing they're going for the IPO finally (plans leaked to the press)
- Unpopular redesign of the new reddit layout which I assume will push a group of folks back to old.reddit
- ...
Also wouldn't surprise me if RES is killed off in the not too distant future.

I was discussing with a mod in comments today, apparently they got "guarantees that old.reddit would stay"
