Hey all, I've been casually playing battletech for... 30 years-ish? One thing I never put much thought into is what the hell are the numbers in the hexes for? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!

If you need to stop playing for the day you can write down all the mech positions and finish the game later.

So there's no official rule to them? Just personal reference?

As far as I’m aware. In the era of smartphones where smartphones are only a smartphone away it makes more sense to take a picture, but numbers would be the best old school way to pack up a game.

I've seen them used for minefields, artillery targeting, and hidden infantry. All cases where putting a marker on the map would give it away.

Handy for playing remotely in the old days, like sending chess moves to each other E2-E4
