That was an awesome video.

Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

the video makes it look like they took down that corvette with an inflatable motorboat. what were they shooting at it that they were able to sink it?
it never ceases to amaze me how much Ukraine is able to accomplish with next to nothing.
the video makes it look like they took down that corvette with an inflatable motorboat.
That's basically what's happening. I don't know if they used inflatable motorboats specifically, Ukraine has used JetSki's previously, but what they're doing is packing shaped explosive charges onto small watercraft, running the craft up against the hull of the ship and then blowing it up. If you rewatch the video you can see that multiple attacking craft were used and at least two of them targeted and damaged the same area of the hull!
Those little boats pack a MEAN punch and as you can see in the video they are damn hard to hit with projectile weapons. The Russian crew was obviously shooting like crazy but they weren't able to stop the attack.
Al-Qaeda famously did this to the American Naval Vessel USS Cole back in 2000. The USS Cole didn't sink thanks to the efforts of its bad ass damage control team but the ship was seriously damaged and it took a year to rebuild her.
Looked like three hits broadside, that second hit may have shown twice. Appears that the ship's magazine blew up, if I know anything about naval explosions, which I do not.
You're not far off. The second drone seems to have triggered a secondary explosion. It could have been the main magazine, or it could have been one of the missiles in the tubes on the side. Either way, Russian ordinance cooked off onboard.
the small boats are explosive drones. they can take a few hits.
Ukraine and their drones. amazing.
somewhere in Ukraine, there's probably some kid, sitting in a bunker, coming up with all of these insane idea of how to make all of these crazy war drones out of scraps and garbage, and they're the reason Ukraine is still in this fight.
columns of russian troops and tanks advancing our position? just fly a few drones over them and drop hellfire. boom, gone!
a russian gunship off the coat of crimea? drone boats. boom, sunk!
Ukraine is the first country to have an entire navy and air force exclusively of - essentially - hand-made drones that's kicking the ass of a world superpower.
Pretty sure they are being downgraded to 'Regional Power', and if they continue to prosecute this war, they might find the level below that.
Look, you may not like it, but they have the largest submarine fleet in the world!
(and it's so capable, those ~~ships~~ boats stay down there indefinitely. Generational crews!)
Well, they added their Black Sea flag ship to their submarine corps!
90° down bubble.
Russia isn't a superpower. China arguable. Both lack the significant powerhouse alliances that a superpower needs to really direct global affairs and diplomacy. There is only one, arguably.
Not to take anything away from Ukraine but IIRC the tactic of using small watercraft loaded with explosives against much larger naval ships was pioneered by Al-Qaeda. They damn near sank the USS Cole back in October of 2000 while it was refueling in Aden Harbor.
This was described as a swarm attack. I didn't catch how many vessels were involved. Seems like a shitload. And the ship saw them coming too. You can see gunfire throughout the video. Seems like at least 4 or 5 hits, wonder how many more got shot to pieces. Seems like there was nothing the ship could do, simply overwhelmed.
By the time the third drone hits the ship it was already badly injured. Incredible job, Ukraine. Keep it up!
This does put a smile on my face
Truly epic.
I'm not a fan of YouTube, but it's worth in this case. Just a shot of Leo di Caprio slipping away was missing.
He would have been stuck below decks with how fast that happened.
