I work for the federal government and had a coworker get incredulous I over the phone because she didn't believe Georgia was a country. She eventually quit before she was fired but people get real ignorant when it comes to things outside of their immediate sphere.
I still remember when Russia invades Georgia was a headline and how confused Americans where.
Pluto is a planet
But why not :(
Ray Charles: It's on my mind
What's the actual name of Georgia the country? Like how we call Turkiye Turkey, or Nippon Japan.
საქართველო, apparently
Sakartvelo if romanized. There is a page about them all.
Fwiw the word you were looking for was "endonym", as opposed to the exonym of Georgia.
Georgia is a state. A sovereign state
Yeah, all the other "countries" use the term "state" when referring to them in English. The US is the only place that has a 'federal' level 'above' states. If you're on Lemmy, you should have some idea of what federation means. This should all put in perspective what the original idea of the United States was and how much control each level was intended to have.
This also makes it all the more hilarious and stupid how Texans wanna call themselves a country. They don't even know the words they're using.
Fyi everything green on the following world map is a federation:

Nice!
In @Mango@lemmy.world’s defence, some of those don’t call their federal subjects "states". Very many do, enough that the comment was ignorant in the extreme, but Canada is a good example of one that doesn’t.
Yeah, something tells me the US ain't the only place that has a federal level above states.
Yeah that figures. I don't think they use the word country though.
Only English, Spanish or Italian speaking Europeans
Por que no los dos?
I didn't realize Europeans were so pro-Georgian independence
Well, of course. There hasn't been a legitimate question on that point since 1991.
Oh this was satirical, I meant the US state
But I don't wanna secede, though! : (
