Problem is that these Americans talk. A lot.
The grim reaper in Monty Python wasn't just whining. The struggle is real.
"World news" and no news about India and Pakistan's latest shenanigans. lmao.
I think you can post whatever you want.
If it is a story from the US that would make international news if it were in another country, it should be posted here. I'm from Canada, US politics is world news to me. Their wretched politics seeps across our border, it's material to my day to day life to stay abreast of the broad current events in the US, just like the UK.
Yeah I don’t think this is something planned you can turn a dial on. People are just posting their news and the origin of people here probably skews heavily US.
Thats's entirely a question of moderation. I do not.know how actively this community is moderated.
US is literally becoming a menace to the World.
Always has been
For better or for worse, the US is part of the world. I had to unsubscribe from politics@lemmy.world because it was non-stop links about even the most trivial paid bits of outrage bait and campaigning, even though I was hoping to keep it to ensure I see perspectives from the US and articles about some of the important issues they have right now.
But I dont think excluding the US from the world, even just in name, is the best choice either. Partially because it encourages American isolation and exceptionalism, which helps nobody.
Ultimately I think this problem is best addressed by how platforms sort and filter content, but for now a new sub for international news articles that has to mention at least one location outside the US might be useful. Just to at least filter out the internal-only stories about MTG and Boebert clashing or the 15 articles about Mitch McConnell having a medical issue on camera. Maybe It could crosspost the top link each day from the major country and city instances/communities to keep it somewhat globally balanced.
!politics@lemmy.world
People commenting “be the change you want to see” like it’s their first day in the internet.
Mods will either need to step up and ban US news, or folks who care will need to find a new comm that only allows international news.
I'm guessing the U.S. isn't in the world?
honestly, why not do what reddit did and restrict US news to a specific sublemmy
That can happen, but this is community run. It's not like you can force people to only post where you want them too. Those communities already exist. And as far as I can tell, it's not breaking any rules in this community. Discussions need to be opened with the mods to define clearer rules and maybe enforce the rules themselves or find volunteers to do so. But this post isn't the solution.
We should create a community named worldnewsnotusa.
I second this, so much. Thank you. Inb4 "and my axe".
This is ultimately just pointless whining. Also, "the entire fediverse" is taken up by us politics? It's barely a big deal on Lemmy.world as a whole.
Seeing US news just means there are more US posters. You need to increase participation from other people. It's not stopping others from posting.
Want more non-US news? The answer isn't less US news. That doesn't make it magically have other content.
We get it, you have an axe to grind with US Americans thinking they're the center of attention.
It's not about having more similarly pointless content, it's about having less of it. Well unless world news really means all kinds of news from everywhere, i.e. any little village anywhere. Dog got lost? World news. Corruption scandal in a town of 300? World news...
Pretending that US national politics doesn't affect the world is deceptive at best, naive at worst.
I'm from Europe but also very interested in US politics. I still think that the bullshit that's happening in Florida with DeSantis or PragerU, just as an example, is not world news worthy.
How DeSantis is polling for the Republican primaries is worthy to be posted in world news, I would say.
It's a fine line, but the fact that there are other communities where the latter can be discussed in depth, makes it fair to require world news to not be muddied with internal US politics posts. Also for US citizens, to more easily find news pertaining to news outside the US.
That being said, I just browse through my feed without looking too much which community it was posted in, so it hasn't bothered me personally.
I also struggle with this often as a 'Merican expat living in another country, hopefully permanently. Occasionally I wanna catch up on US shit but most of the time I care more about what's going on in Europe and other places so I couldn't care less about the perpetually stupid shit happening back in the US.
I'm still learning the language where I moved to so English news resources that are about other places can be very valuable to me. My main resource (and advice to others with this issue) is using an RSS reader with good sources you find along the way. Not every site has RSS these days but many do. I fill in the blanks with podcasts and stories in the language of my country. Only downside is no discussion unless you post on Lemmy or other social media, but maybe that can become a thing we do. :)
/l/politics already ran me off for trying to opine in on a more diverse political discourse than just US news.
Mod told me, "...all politics is local, and few care about international politics. You also have a language barrier that also makes global political forums less interactive."
Then banished my opinion.
Wait do they think local is only for the USA? like somehow outside their borders local politics don't exist because it is all some how "international"? Wait, does that mean they think when the USA does foreign policy that it is not "international"?
Wow, the mental gymnastics needed to be a member of the USA must be tiring.
They're trying to defend their choice of community name (arguably not doing a good job in my opinion). A lot of people have been complaining in other communities and I think they're getting defensive. Personally I think they chose poorly but ultimately it's not my call, so whatever. Only ones who can force them to change would be lemmy.world mods. They're saying there's no such thing as generic politics and that it'd all be local to somewhere so their claim to the name is fine (at least that's my interpretation based on what you said). Again, I disagree with the quality of their choice but I accept that it's their choice.
We won't know because the discussion is forbidden. I'm sure they'll point to some ever changing reason like all good politicians
Discussion is forbidden everyone!
Free speech for thee fuck me...no fuck you
What kind of cult are they running over there?
I would take it with a grain of salt. From my experience, 9/10 users who complain about a ban embellish it so they look like they were in the right.
Oh I just noticed the little logo for them is the stupid uncle sam hat wearing lemming. well at least the .world one is.
LAME
I see nothing in the rules that suggest that those types of posts don't belong here. You need to be making a plea to the mods, not the posters.
