If you update the Google Voice app, you cannot make phone calls anymore if you cannot randomly validate a US phone number. Which pretty much kills the only use case for googlevoice: having a phone number when traveling, when you cannot receive SMS on your US phone number (thanks verizon).

You can still call from the website, for now, but not the app.

Voip.ms ( though it's more business oriented)

If you read the hacker news thread, this was just a misconfiguration of the user's voice app. They needed to set prefer Wi-Fi calling and everything just worked

Are there any good Google Voice alternatives? I'm using it now, but I have a feeling it will go the way of all other Google services - cancelled. I would love another option.

I just use eSIMs with Airalo when traveling internationally now

Fongo. Textnow

That's definitely not the only use case.

This is a good thing. VOIP numbers are cheap and if you're a scammer I expect you to invest in your dream
