Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Maybe the kids are for food?
Didn't Putin ask the same not long ago?
Why would Putin want North Korean women to have more children?
Ah, the old Lemmy switcheroo.
Dam
So they can work in his factories?
First Putin, now this fat fuck, Xi will be next...
China was first. This is from March: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/time-money-love-china-brainstorms-ways-boost-birth-rate-2023-03-15/
Getting ready for war
What are you going to feed them with?
I think they are the food
Lots of countries are trying to encourage births, his approach is just a bit more... Direct. Enacting policies? Just tell people to bump uglies more!
Also, given South Korea's population is projected to decline sharply, having more soldiers to throw in the frontlines would be a strategic advantage in a future war.
To give some perspective, North Korea currently has about the same fertility rate as the US.
Per the article, North Korea's fertility rate is 1.79 in 2022, down from 1.88 in 2014. Meanwhile, the US has been on a slow increase with its TFR over the last few years - 1.782 in 2022 and 1.784 in 2023. Interestingly, older women are contributing to the increase over younger women.
And N. Korea has little to no immigration to subsidize being below 2.1.
Good point - and it's an important distinction. Immigrants in the US usually have higher birth rates than native-born. Of course no one is allowed to emigrate from North Korea but that most likely contributes to their net decline.
I wanted three kids - my wife was done at two. It’s not like we really debated it, but I’m trying to figure out how I could have said “See honey, dear leader says we should have three, and he is of course infallible. Do it for nation’s great glory!”
This sounds dangerously like you actually respect your wife.
Guys, I think he's serious
DickTators be like what?
This is the best summary I could come up with:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said it is a duty of women to halt a fall in the country’s births in order to strengthen national power, state media said Monday, as his government steps up the call for the people to have more children.
“Stopping the decline in birthrates and providing good child care and education are all our family affairs that we should solve together with our mothers,” Kim said in his opening speech.
South Korea’s fertility rate, the lowest in the developed world, is believed to be due to a potent cocktail of reasons discouraging people from having babies, including a decaying job market, a brutally competitive school environment for children, traditionally weak child care assistance and a male-centered corporate culture where many women find it impossible to combine careers and family.
The country’s fertility rate recorded a major decline following a famine in the mid-1990s that was estimated to have killed hundreds of thousands of people, the Seoul-based Hyundai Research Institute said in a report in August.
“Given North Korea lacks resources and technological advancements, it could face difficulties to revive and develop its manufacturing industry if sufficient labor forces are not provided,” the institute report said.
Ahn, the website head, said that Kim Jong Un’s repeated public appearances with his young daughter, Ju Ae, are also likely be efforts to encourage families.
The original article contains 630 words, the summary contains 233 words. Saved 63%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
This is usually a story you hear from a country as they develop. Birth rate declines as development rises and isn't affected much by other factors. What development factors are triggering a decline in the birth rate of North Koreans?
Even in fucking Gaza the fertility rate is 3.38. That's a territory that's constantly been bombed, people keep getting shot, and there's lack of reliable access to clean water and electricity.
So what are the acrobatics NK apologists justify this with?
I'm a bit confused. What's there to justify? Every country needs their birthrate to be within a certain margin and north Korea is no exception. Other countries have also enacted pronatalist policies.
For sures. Just increase the quality of life and grant us freedoms for us to enjoy, oh benevolent dictator. Our depression, fear, and malnutrition makes it difficult for us to get hard/wet.
With whom, Jong Un?! With whom?!
Actual unironic North Korean human farms in 3, 2, 1...
Do you know nothing about the female reproductive system? Just as it has a way to shut that thing down if there has been a rape, it can just become spontaneously pregante if the carrier really wants a baby (or is ordered by The Great Leader).
Envy from the Europe with its population going extint and aging. Is there any single country in Europe where it's not the case?
If people don't think there is much of a future in this world then they're not going to have kids are they? And given that the majority of the problems in the world are caused by overpopulation of reduced population seems like a good thing.
The majority of humanities problems are caused by shit government policy and billionaires' addiction to pollution and making line go up.
Overpopulation is a part of the issue, but pales in comparison to the rich, corps and corrupt politicians.
E: you're bang on about the existential dread being part of it, if folks are poor or have little going for them, the likelihood of having kids drops significantly.
