I am guessing here but It sounds like the not drinking part might be legal advice.
If here was in anyway operating the boat it's be bad to admit that. Or if the operators of the boat where not keeping an eye on passengers it may cause them to look liable in some way. The story could just be a cover for a more mundane and real one that he's not allowed to tell.
Since he fell off after drinking a few and winning an air guitar contest on a cruise ship, I'm going with him being a passenger, not an employee.
Imagine having someone on the ship who is addressed as "the captain" without winning the air guitar contest. The arrogance, my god

Bamboo is edible. Sort of. They put it in Chinese food sometimes. It's awful and you have to pick it out, but I assume you can survive if you eat it.
