I didn't mess with mods in EA, but I'm tempted to give a few a try with full release. Specifically camera mods to start. Anyone using any mods at this point, and any you recommend or advise steering clear of? Thanks!

EDIT: I don't see anyone really using anything yet, so I'm going to hold off myself. I don't know enough about it to feel confident I won't jack up my game. Still hope to get some positive feedback regarding mods after release by someone here, so if you do use any and are happy with them, please do let us know!

No, but I keep wondering if there is a toolset like Neverwinter Nights or Elder Scrolls so I could go and fix a ton of things that bother me, as well as creating an entire new campaign for myself. I always loved making modules for NWN back in the day, and not one D&D RPG has had a toolset like that since to be able to do that. I hella want it for this one... 😩

[–] ThayWizGwar@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that NWN toolset was amazing; ahead of it's time. I still hold out hope that we get some kind of DM mode for BG3, but Larian doesn't see it as likely. I don't think the current mod support is enough for someone to set up something like that with mods alone, but I really don't know much about how that all works yet.

Have you tried DOS2? It has a campaign builder.

[–] Allectus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

You should check out Solasta: Crown of the Magister and it's DLCs. With the unfinished business mod it's the closest to RAW DND available.

Critically it has fantastic support for full custom campaign creation as well, as can be seen in the workshop. Custom overworld campaign map linkages only became possible in the past month or so, so most custom campaigns are linked areas (not unlike BG3). Now that overworld maps are also possible I can't imagine a reason to use another toolset.

Camera mod would be good, but I'd also like a mod to remove ranged weapon projectile animation. The current animation feels like there's no power behind it. Just follows this kind of limp arc and I hate it.

[–] JimmyMcGill@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Tbf that limp arc is actually true. Many times I can’t attack with a spell because the path is blocked but not with a crossbow

[–] magnusrufus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

This is is on my wish list as well. I thought I might be the only one bothered by it enough to want a mod fixing it.

[–] ThayWizGwar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

It is a limp arc. I didn't realize it until I read those words.

I use a controller so the camera just follows me, so camera mod not really needed. I can't think of a mod I'd want yet. But it's nice to have a big mod community giving everyone options.

[–] ThayWizGwar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just realized last night that the camera does the same thing with K+M if you click and hold with the left mouse button. It is pretty nice to be able to just walk through an area and not have to click, click, click, pan, shift, click, click, click.

i think the Home key also sticks the camera to active character. There is also Auto-Rotate Camera in the Accessibility Options for when the camera is focused on active character.

I just installed a tiny handful, but haven't had time to test them out. I'm primarily doing it for Approval Tweaks, as the relationship progression with all companions have been way too crazy for me. Basically became soulmates with Shadowheart before the first Long Rest.

Also trying out Cunning Strike primarily for the advertised fix to Sneak Attack behavior. Should work with Commanders Strike now so that manoeuvre isn't useless anymore. And in general should work you know... properly.

Was looking at Approval Tweaks, any idea if using it stops you gaining Steam achievements?

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Most likely, though there is another mod that supposedly re-enables achievements even with mods running.

[–] Allectus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The achievement enabler introduced a bunch of odd bugs for me (e.g. skipping interactions as if I'd pressed a button) that coupled with the fact that it's a full on dll replacement (read: arbitrary code execution) skeeved me out enough to uninstall it.

If definitely did work for enabling achievements while playing modded, for what it's worth though.

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I didn't get the achievements working even with it, I think. Did you run through the launcher?

[–] Allectus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I use BG3 mod manager for most mods. For that one though you have to do everything manually, if I recall. It was just a matter of dropping the files from the zip file into the game directory and overwriting (I of course backed up my own copies first).

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's what I did, and I also use BG3MM. But I made a shortcut directly to the exe to skip the launcher, and I wondered if that's why I was still not getting achievements maybe.

[–] Allectus@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

I launch normally through steam, though with the skip launcher option on so I don't have to bother with the splash screen.

I've had Wyll become my romance partner when I hadn't even talked to the dude outside of recruiting him into my camp. I need those tweaks; that kind of thing is super jarring and doesn't even make sense. First run, Gale and Lae'zel were advancing their quests before I had even found a settlement and now on my second run, I'm trying to advance Gale's and he hasn't even asked for an item to consume yet and I'm already in the Underdark. :/

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hah, I still have no idea who Gale is. I read something on here saying he is missable if you fail a skill check at a portal, but I never even saw a portal!

Oh well, something for a second playthrough.

[–] ShittyRedditWasBetter@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not sure if/when it closes down, but there is a portal in between emerald Grove and where you start off. You can go back and find it. You wouldn't expect it there because the waypoints are so close

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 1 year ago

At this point I'm fine with ignoring him and saving him and the Drow lady for a second playthrough, but thanks for the tip!

[–] Allectus@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I run a bunch, mostly focused on making the game closer to DND 5E where possible, expanding build options, somewhat more difficult and tactical, and more immersive generally. I've been very happy so far.

I’m probably going to install a weight limit mod, I dump strength on my face and hate having to right click> send to camp all the heavy stuff.

For my second run I might install subclasses that didn’t make the cut, and probably Party Limit Be Gone along with some difficulty mods to keep it interesting.

[–] Sacha@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Doing vanilla right now, will probably mod for later playthroughs. Maybe by the time I finish (still in act 1) there will be more interesting mods.

Hoping for mods that fix the elf faces. There's only 2 that are good across male and female. The rest...idk, it's like the faces are too big for their heads and they don't really look like elves. One of the male elf faces has no forehead and a super square jaw and chin. He looks like a toad. Half elves look more like a traditional elf.

Beyond that I'm not sure. Maybe giving people 2 bonus actions like some rule sets do or something. I feel like early game, you don't have enough actions. And if you dont go fighter/barbarian. You never get those extra actions. It's fine in table top, but I feel in a videogame it's not enough actions? Though I'm starting to get over that one. I have to see what mods are available and what interests me.

I know there is a camera mod and it is very tempting to install it. The camera is kind of awkward at times, especially if your trying to pan over a cliff that's higher than you. But I didn't see any evidence that the mod fixes my gripes with the camera.

[–] Why9@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not running any mods just yet but I'm waiting for an appearance modifier mid game. My character does not look as cool as he did in CC and it hurts looking at him during any cutscene

[–] ThayWizGwar@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

He's a beautiful boy. Time will be kind. My wizard ends up looking like Jesus, every time.

[–] skullone@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Unfinished Business mod for BG3 when?!

[–] Glemek@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

In my main game, I'm doing vanilla 4player coop, all custom characters.

In my side game I'm running party limit begone and the one that re enables achievements, so I can run all the origin characters at once. Which is what I wish I had done for my last run of dos2.

I'm playing on tactician mode too, and trying to see how far I can get without resting. I might add a difficulty mod at some point idk.
