I have an established system with my office peers/subordinates. If I knock on your door/pod wall and you give me a thumbs down. I won’t bother you but they also know to follow up with me when they are done with whatever they were working on. It’s a good system of mutual respect.

Got a guy at work who gets frustrated when he has to repeat himself because someone was listening to something. Well guess what - even if I wasn't listening to something I'd be so far in my own head you'd have to repeat yourself anyway.
On the plane, I put on headphones without playing anything, just so people will not talk to me
Added bonus if they are active noise cancelling. Really creates a nice quiet zone.
My autism creates an aura that people dare not enter. That and wearing a winter coat in summer

This happened to me, but it was "have you heard of our lord and savior" rather than just a hi, so I was very pissed.
