I've started seeing racist memes from the exploding heads instance on All. I know I can (and have) blocked the communities I've come across from there, but I'd be happier to know that my home instance doesn't create a space for the people seeking out that kind of content. Obviously I'm not in charge here and to my understanding we ideally do things democratically here, so I'm really just hoping to start a conversation.

I just wrote a big post here about it: https://reddthat.com/comment/371578 in reply to another comment which sums up the facts:

I'm sorry that you are having troubles. Federation happens when users on our instance search for a community on another instance. As you can see from "All", we currently have a couple of users on Reddthat who has subscribed to the communities on exploding-heads.

Community Subscribers

I agree that the current moderation controls are non-existent. This is a known issue for users, moderators and server administrators alike. The Lemmy fediverse went from ~2000 active users to over 100k in a little over a week. These issues are problems that the developers and users are finding and creating fixes for.

There are only two real levels/options available for us.

  • Server Admins: Defederation (which blocks every community for every user on that instance)
  • Users: Blocking a Community or User (removes that content from your feed)

What is coming out soon (I hope) will be the option for Users to perform a block/filter on an instance level. That would completely solve your problem as I understand it.

If they are specifically targeting you, attacking other Reddthat users or completely attacking Reddthat at a whole. Then we would consider defederating. That goes with any instance in the fediverse, and does not go specifically towards this instance.
I try to be very transparent with these items, as do other server admins. Making a unilateral decision to block an instance purely on different opinions is something that goes against the type of community that I would like Reddthat to become. People are able to have different opinions. Without a different of opinions, the world would be a very boring place.

I hope you understand our point of view, why the federation initially happened. When and why a defederation would happen, and that moderation & filtering tools for users will be coming soon.

Cheers,
Tiff

I am glad having you as an Admin and I think you are making the right decision allowing for different opinions to exist. In the end every user has the ability to block communities and users for themselves.

Looking forward to finally being able to block whole instances. Will it come with a future version of Lemmy?

I'm surprised to learn that isn't an option yet. Tho perhaps such features might also be useful to see implemented in clients, as a local filter

That is an extremely well thought out and grounded reply. I expected things to become boilerplate phrases after the first sentence. Instead, I read viewpoints and shared concepts, with an emphasis on providing as much freedom and equal treatment as possible. I am honestly gobsmacked to read this as a reality. Thank you, I feel lucky to be here!
