Still pretty new to the community (as everyone I guess), but so far so good. Coming from Reddit, the amount of content is a bit limited, but it's growing every day I feel. I'm having trouble though opening the trending communities bot, giving me not found errors at every link. No idea what causes it.
feddit.nl announcements
Re: trending communities, if a link gives you this error:
The server returned this error: FetchError: invalid json response body at http://lemmy:8536/api/v3/post/list?community_name=exchristian%40lemmy.one&page=1&limit=20&sort=New&type_=All. This may be useful for admins and developers to diagnose and fix the error
that's just a timeout that's usually resolved by a refresh. It'll happen more often with links from that list than elsewhere, because it's more likely to provide links that no-one else on feddit.nl has visited before.
I just had a click around on the latest post, and that was the only error I got. If it's not that though, please leave a comment. I'm on the same instance as you, so can investigate what the problem might be, and it's my bot, so can try to fix it if need be.
Als eerste, dank je voor het opzetten en onderhouden van feddit.nl. Lekker bezig!
Groeien? Enthousiast er over zijn naar mensen die het nog niet kennen. En natuurlijk netjes met elkaar omgaan.
I like feddit.nl but had some negative experiences with users on Lemmy when i posted some content myself. Unfortunately that has soured the experience for me quite a bit and since then i mainly lurk. I don't take feddit for granted though, but I question whether lemmy is the place for me.
What kind of negative experiences did you have?
I was posting for the sake of sharing laughs but some power hungry mod wasn't having it and was bending over backwards, flexing their power to make it stop and an example out of me. It wasn't on feddit.nl but on another quite big and popular instance. Then i also had the occasional run ins with unmoving lemmitors who left quite shitty and uncalled for comments on my posts so i deleted it all and quit. Bleh.
Imo, if we want a big community we must treat each other with dignity and respect. Perhaps ask ourselves why someone posts something before leaving these quick and easy jabs, and also appreciate that people post to begin with (even if we may not necessarily like the posted thing). I'm pretty easy to demotivate with this kind of negativity and i bet I'm not the only one.
Just my two cents ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I completely agree with you. Dignity and respect is the basis of a strong community. In that sense having good mods is very important. They should help to ensure this (and of course, not make matters worse like in your case). Users should feel responsible as well, to not just downvote, but say something about it. Peer pressure usually is quite a good way to keep certain behaviours in check.
A while ago, I commented on a post with a meme about overweight people, which was disrespectful in my opinion. I said something about the role of eating disorders and societal pressure to lose weight in the development of obesity. So, of course, I was immediately called a fatty, etc by some people and downvoted. However, I was very happy to see that the mods removed these comments and left the ones that were respectful (whether they agreed or disagreed). After a while, I also got upvoted by as many people as had downvoted me. Whether I am being upvoted or downvoted does not matter that much to me personally, but it does say something about the apparent controversity of what I said. I think by good moderation, it was possible to handle this discussion respectfully, even though some people were not able to behave. So, it is a good example, I think.
I think that at Lemmy there are some similar issues with mods and people being disrespectful as we had with Reddit. However, by impression is that it is not as bad as with Reddit, where you seemed to have a lot more negative group behaviour. But maybe I just got lucky up until now. I think at any social platform like this, some people are going to misbehave. Some people just want to take out their agression and it is much easier to do so if you do not have to look the person you are hurting in the eye. So, the response to that is very important, I think.
First off, thanks admins for dealing with the shitshow that is 'people on the internet' so that we can have some fun entertainment and discussions <3
Since we are a small instance that is Dutch-focused I feel we should put our efforts towards making our main community !thenetherlands@feddit.nl more active instead of splitting the content to several communities like !nieuws@feddit.nl Maybe a weekly recurring thread like the maandag klaagdraad they do over on /r/thenetherlands, or something like 'what have you been up to this week?' for some more casual chatting.
I also see a lemmy.world admin has been added to the team, welcome @clueless_stoner :) I'm curious about the collaboration between feddit.nl and lemmy.world, are both intended to be ran similarly? The biggest difference I noticed is that we on feddit.nl are federated with hexbear, while lemmy.world isn't, is that expected to change? How are things like future defederations handled, I can imagine that for some malicious instance you will just have to act quickly to block it, but for other instances where there is less time pressure I would appreciate it if the admins make the users part of the discussion and decision making process.
Feddit.nl will always be run depending on what the userbase wants and needs. While yes, I am also a lemmy.world admin, here i'm only looking to fend off attacks and try to help the feddit.nl community where/if possible. If you would like to discuss policymaking or if you have any concerns regarding how an issue would be handled, then please feel free to join our Matrix space so you can discuss these issues with us. There's been some amazing participation and suggestions in this thread and I can assure you that everything you say is being heard, and we'll be more than happy to work with the community to try to address them. I appreciate your kindness, and take care! <3
wait we're federated with hexbear? I thought they defederated from us because we were too small for them to put us on their federation whitelist 🤔
If you check https://hexbear.net/instances you can see feddit.nl in the list, I'm not subscribed to any of their communities so I haven't noticed whether their content shows up, but I see reactions in the comments by hexbear users sometimes.
I love Lemmy and I'm very satisfied with this instance. The only thing I'm missing from Reddit is the highly specialized communities with guides etc. I don't really have an opinion on the web interface.
Dutch speakers are a small minority on lemmy and I'm glad there are a few Dutch communities here. Seeing all the almost dead Dutch city comms, we might have been too ambitious about how many people from those cities would be on lemmy. Maybe a consolidation is due to get communities a productive userbase that has a chance to poke out above local. Maybe topic based instead of location based Dutch communities? Can we somehow steal firefox' local translator for lemmy to be an inclusive bilingual server?
Furthermore the delays between servers seem to be huge. I often get new, 8h old replies to my comments, that is no base to even try a discussion.
I think from a technological point of view, feddit.nl is fine the way it is right now for me. I do think that there could be more content and it would be nice if more people joined.
I know I probably could post more myself. I have always been a lurker on Reddit and I almost never posted and only rarely commented. I try to do that more now to help grow the community, but it does not come naturally to me. I always feel very awkward when I said something. 😅
I am not sure whether there is a technological solution to grow the community. I think the issue is more social. People might not know about it and I suspect this is a typical case of the bootstrapping problem in ICT (i.e., the technology becomes only attractive to people when a certain number of other users use it as well). In that case, it would help if we inform others about the existence of feddit.nl and we should encourage people to post and comment.
Maybe it would be nice to get a list of ideas on things we can do that people might find more engaging. Maybe some of us would like to have daily discussion threads about an interesting peoposition, or maybe some people would like more memes or something like a weekly thread asking people how they are doing. I think in general, at this stage, it might be nice to have some daily or weekly stuff like this so that people know that there is something to interact with regularly. It might also make people feel more connected or part of the community in this way. It might be best to ask the community about that, because my preferences might de different from others.
Well, for being very awkward to say something, you do give a very thorough and insightful answer, which I can relate to very much by the way! I too was primarily a lurker on Reddit with the occasional upvote or comment here and there and the very occasional post.
But you're right, if we want Lemmy to become an active and successful successor to Reddit, engagement is key.
So, to all my fellow Lemmies, upvote, comment and post!! (But do try to post quality stuff. Enough shitposts already.)
Thanks. That is encouraging. :-)
I agree with the quality comment. That is still important!
How about a Matrix room to coordinate and discuss all suggestions/possible improvements?
Sounds like a good idea!
Liking Lemmy so far, it has become a replacement of reddit for sure.
What I want, nay need, is for this instance to be on Lemmy version 19.5 or higher and the UI/apps to support a particular feature which will be essential (in my humble opinion) for Lemmy moving forward: the ability to block instances as a user.
The WebUI is not great but I use Voyager on mobile mostly so no biggie on that front but I would appreciate a quality jump on WebUI nonetheless. It feels a bit 'dated' tbh.
Try these UI's - they provide a more modern look for whatever instance you are on:
The blocking of instances is coming with lemmy v0.19 which should be out in a couple of weeks. Some mobile apps already provide this: both !boostforlemmy@lemmy.world as !lemmyconnect@lemmy.ca support it.
Happy to see you participating here m8 ;)
Tuurlijk! Hoe gaat het met je Nederlands? 😁
I like how the initial idea was for you to be on the feddit.nl admin team to have someone in the US timezone. Just for emergency situations. But you can't help it to step up 🫡
Thanks for the info. Can I use Photon on feddit.nl or do I have to use lemmy.world?
Not Photon it seems, but you can use Alexandrite or any other mobile or web client. We'll discuss offering Photon as an alternative interface on Feddit.nl
Thanks!
Yes you can use any instance on phtn.app - on Lemmy World we have https://p.lemmy.world
I tried https://p.feddit.nl/ but it did not work.
Anyway, I’ll live with the current ui, no worries.
Second the blocking
Third the blocking.
I created an account here and a couple of communities, but it was sort of by accident that I'm here. At the time, join-lemmy referred to the Awesome Instances GitHub page, and that recommended feddit.nl, and said don't overthink it, so I didn't. If I had thought about it more, I would've joined up to feddit.uk I suppose (although that's the instance that people are now concerned about now, ironically enough).
But given the .nl domain, maybe feddit.nl should just be a place for people to talk to one another in languages (other than English) that are popular in The Netherlands. For the focus to generally be specific to one location, and for Communities that other instances in the Fediverse don't provide. (sort of like what I imagine feddit.it does for the people of Italy).
I'm fairly active on Lemmy (from accounts on endlesstalk.org and lemmy.world), but the content I really want to create is animated in some form - as a gif or a webp file. My efforts in this are being stymied by Lemmy, as it seems utterly determined to wreck them, either by half-arsing an unwanted transcode, or re-compressing something that's already compressed. So, similar to others in this thread, but for completely different reasons, I'm waiting for the software itself to mature before I can fully unleash my genius on the world.
As for frontends, I've started using photon at lemmy.world. It's really nice, especially for the aforementioned animated stuff. I've even started using phtn.app for browsing on my phone too. (There's also Tesseract, a fork of photon that I've only seen at db0 and dubvee.org, but would like to play with.)
I have this issue on mobile where I can see the number of comments on a post, 30 for example. But then when I click on the post, I see very little or no comments. The same happens on comment replies, where I can even see them in my inbox, but when I click on them they can't load.
Not sure if it's related to feddit.nl, but it's really annoying and it's making this already kind of empty place look even more empty
I observed that too on feddit.de. Posting myself was the weirdest, I got replies as notifications but couldn't see them as comments or in context.
I kinda hate the web interface to be honest, but I don't know what can be done about it?
It's missing a good consistent UX, where every little piece seems to be designed in a vacuum and has it's own quirks.
The bug where the back button shows a different page till you refresh is really annoying.
And not opening external links in a new tab is also not cool. Usually it's fine if there are links and they don't open in a new tab, that way the user can decide if it needs to open in a new tab and it keeps tab count lower. But from a UX point of view it's terrible in this case, because sometimes clicking simply opens the post and sometimes it opens an external site. Always opening in a new tab is annoying, cause the posts can be opened in the same tab just fine. Opening external links in the same tab is also annoying. IMHO this behavior should be changed where external links are always opened in a new tab. I've seen a couple of posts about this in the past.
Were the unfed issues ever resolved?
I kinda hate the web interface to be honest, but I don’t know what can be done about it?
I just created an account on kbin.social, which is pretty nice, and then subscribed here. Works well enough.
I joined feddit.nl because it has the least amount of blocked servers. If I don't like a community I block it myself. The minute it starts behaving like lemmy.world I'm out.
Hey Lemmy World admin here. What blocks are you talking about? We defederated with Hexbear.net and the rest are Loli, neonazi and csam instances. Which one of these do you miss most?
Have a look here to see which ones are blocked by Lemmy.world: https://gui.fediseer.com/instances/detail/lemmy.world
And if you are angry that one of these instances is blocked, we don't even want you on Lemmy World.
If I don’t like a community I block it myself
That'd work fine if you ran a solo instance, but you don't. Being part of a community means having to be aligned with a common set of values, even just a little. And if your values include giving nazis a megaphone, allowing csam, etc, then you don't belong here.
