As someone currently having to medicate a cat 3 times a day. Dogs are definitely easier.

When my pupper had to have knee surgery, I could pretty much get her to take the pills raw if I had the right level of enthusiasm.

My little black and white ball of fury on the other hand? We've tried pill pockets, crushing the pills into food, treats etc... nothing worked.

To cut a long story short, my kitchen now looks like something out of a drug den. There's a pestle and mortar with this pink antibiotic stain from crushing the pills, the dust of which is poured into boiling water (to dissolve) and allowed to cool; thus allowing me to use a syringe to inject the drugs straight onto his tongue.

Edit: water syringe, not needle

Yeah, cats are all around assholes.

some of them will eat the cheese and then spit out the pill anyway though.

My dog is part of this elitist crew.

My friend had a Shepherd mix that would do that. It was so frustrating! We tried everything- smashing it up in dog food, dissolving it in broth, everything. Finally we put the pill and a little piece of pill pocket on the end of a straw, she held his mouth open, and I spitballed it in too far for him to get it out.

My dog used to be able to separate the pill from anything too so I finally just taught him to dry swallow the pill and get a treat after.

Used to have a big mastiff mix of some sort, easily 100+ pounds, but one of the doofiest most lovable dogs.

We didn't even dress the pills up, we'd just hold them in our hands, pretend to eat a few and then drop it while going, "OOPS! NO DON'T EAT THAT!" and they'd get vacuumed up before he even knew what they were.

Yeah, Petey is like that.

The 5 second rule doesn't apply when you have a 2 second dog. ๐Ÿ˜‚

My last pup had a liquid medication, twice a day. We had them make it fish flavored. She loved that stuff, it was so easy to squirt it in her mouth with the dosing syringe.

Current pup has 2 pills twice a day. He's mostly deaf but can still hear that bottle open. He's sneaky and will walk away to spit out the pills. He'll refuse pill pockets. He knows all the tricks. I just have to shove the pills down his throat, then watch him eat a treat so I know he didn't cough a pill up into his cheek or beard. Grumpy old man dog.

My cat is the same, but a method he can't get around is crushing and dissolving the pill in boiling water, then letting it cool down and using a water syringe to put directly on the tongue. Worth a try if he's beating every other scheme you've cooked up!

I'm glad we don't have that problem. I've seen several people commenting the same thing.

We had to give our childhood dog shots for diabetes.

He loved it cause he got pigs ears as a treat afterwards.

"Who wants to be shot???" you'd ask, and he start wiggling in delight.

Aww! ๐Ÿฅฐ

My dad had to give his cat insulin. Apparently, you can give the shot subdermal on cats.

Look at Richie Rich over here, giving cheese and meat twice a day.

PeanutButterPill is the way.

[โ€“] Geodad@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just once a day. He usually gets it in a pill pocket, but the wifey was making a sammich.
