I'm just looking at different Doctor Who characters aren't I.

They'll learn some new Greek letters soon, and been there'll be more.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Will they tho

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 27 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

if you're none of these you might be φ-male

This needs far more upvotes than it has. Maybe people aren't familiar with the correct pronunciation of that letter?

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks! I think the correct pronunciation might technically be /ˈfaɪ/ (FYE), but I've heard it pronounced /ˈfi/ (FEE) often enough, I'm not sure.

[–] wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

According to Wikipedia, modern pronunciation agrees with us ("FEE"), but apparently ancient Greeks would have pronounced it "FEY" (or "FEY-EE", I can't quite tell to what degree epsilon-iota was a diphthong).

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

when I see epsilon-iotas on campus, they tend to be diphthongs.

astrology except you pick your starsign to fit your personality instead of the reverse, I guess

[–] wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago

We have a term for this. It's called "making stuff up"

[–] nathanjent@programming.dev 5 points 15 hours ago

It's just the same angry guy with 6 different styles.

Alpha male is the stereotype of MLM salesman

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

The choices are rather limited, but it's fun to use Latin I guess. Makes you sound smart, like your classifications have some cutting edge meaning. I generally use ancient wonders of the world as in..."Are you a 'Gardens of Babylon?' ". In all cases, and every case, you contain parts of all.

[–] wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 hours ago

It's Greek.

Out ligging some balls

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Seriously? Not a single Brave New world reference??!!??

Alpha children wear grey. They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm really awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse.”

[–] hungryphrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 hours ago

What kind of kid picks out grey or khaki clothes?

[–] debil@lemmy.world 7 points 15 hours ago

I guess the people who identify themself as " male" don't bother about books much.

This alpha sigma omega bs is just astrology for men

[–] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 23 points 1 day ago (5 children)

/ the new Meyers-Briggs Personality Test. It's literally an ego toy, something you use to enhance the narrative that you tell yourself about yourself.

[–] wolframhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Worse yet, this is just a way to try to hierarchically categorize yourself as being simultaneously:

  1. part of an in-group,
  2. better than others
  3. a paragon of your sex

It's just so pitifully shallow. Like, if you're going to stroke your own ego, at least do it with something unique to yourself. Define yourself by the people, experiences and things with which you surround yourself. Define yourself by the things you do. Literally anything that would make you more than a penis with wrapping paper and a voice-recorded greeting card saying how awesome the penis is.

Idk wtf a "gamma male" is but at least they acknowledge men with long hair now.

[–] fmtx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

Bruce Banner is a gamma male?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Idk what those terms mean but it seems pretty gay to be comparing your boyfriends like that

[–] damdy@lemm.ee 16 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Does anyone read into this bollocks?

May as well measure my head.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago

May as well measure my head.

You joke, but they literally talk about measuring certain parts of people's faces and have weird terms for certain jaw types/sizes and shit.

It's real fucking weird.
