From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Thank you everyone for your insight, comments, and help with the process! I'm started with Fedora, and after some brief confusion between Gnome and Plasma, I'm off! :D

Have you met people? They're the worst.

Where did the Linux socks thing come from? I see it around and am curious about the lore.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago

Lots of non-normative folk like Linux. Far as I know there was just a spree of posts showing btop and thigh highs and it went from there

[–] seaQueue@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago

Not enough plaid skirt IMO

Reppin argyle socks instead of the classic striped, hell yeah.

You have been acquitted🤪

[–] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't like it. But maybe that is just me.

The Linux socks thing was odd until you showed up, thanks bbg

It was a bold move cotton, and it paid off

Happy cake day homie, if I don't see your hairy ass legs and socks every week from now on, I'll cry

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Every week? Dang, I uh... I'm flattered! I'm just not sure that I can keep up with that type of commitment. 😅

Let me know if you figure out how to get UO working on Wine. I have to use the online client.

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ultima Outlands is the way to go! Here's how to get it going: https://wiki.uooutlands.com/Install_UO_on_Linux

[–] Nibodhika@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

Came here for the wallpaper, saved this reply for the link. I had considered running my own server a while back to be able to play again.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a blast from the past; it has to be 30 years since I played UO.

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

It's free to play with that link! Outlands is like you remember, plus end game

[–] ree2@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Happy for you! Nice wallpaper btw!

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ultima Online! I stared at that art for days!

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It's still one of my favorites!

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Is this a fresh install and sitting at 10gb ram? Seems like a lot.

[–] Zugyuk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I had Discord, and AnvilToolkit running, along with update on a separate terminal :D

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That rams not gonna use itself.

[–] tehn00bi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

My truenas server agrees.

[–] meekah@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

2.4k packages as well, or is that normal on fedora?

[–] Lawnman23@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

FC42 is on kernel 6.14.11 for stable, this rig is still on .0 for some reason.

Something is not right.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 3 points 1 week ago

Sick wallpaper and good distro taste.

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

What did you do to get the nice terminal output with the colour display and fedora ASCII art? Just a copy+paste in bashrc?

[–] amda@feddit.nl 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Looks like neofetch, still gets a lot of use even if it's archived
