Kirk's exploits get so exaggerated, lol. He's a big dork. He's like a nerd who started working out and acting like a tough guy in his 30s. Picard is just the opposite, like a reformed troublemaker.

And even though Picard has the rep of being the one who romanticizes the concept of exploration (studious, reading about old timey ships, etc.), Kirk's geeks out about it so much more: he's obsessed with his ship, he's studied (and seems to genuinely academically enjoy) space battles, and they even gave him that line in the movies: "Second star to the right... and straight on til morning."

...which is a quote from Peter Pan. Lol

Thanks for breaking my brain this morning, Mr Stamets. Now I'll be contemplating this in the shower. If you don't hear from me in a few hours initiate an emergency medial transport for me please.

I'll make sure to load a uniform into the pattern buffer just in case.

Picard is an intelligent, well-read bad-ass.

Kirk is an egocentric, showboating dork.

No, you’re thinking of William Shatner.

[–] JWBananas@startrek.website 4 points 11 months ago

They're the same picture

This whole meme hinges on a single line from Gary Mitchell, told, not shown, and it's even followed up with "I knew I could distract you from academia with that little blonde lab technician". Kirk's hardly dumb. An example might be when he engineered gunpowder to kill the Gorn, or his battle of wits with the Romulan commander in Balance of Terror. But usually a broad description of someone like that captures their most prominent trait, and Kirk does not project himself as an intellectual. In fact, having recently rewatched TOS, his leadership style is more swagger and bullying than thoughtfulness.

Sounds like a less magical Rick from Rick and Morty then.

I'll have you know trombone players aren't the nerds you think they are. Large lung capacity and dexterous tongues make them very popular with the ladies, ifyaknowhatimean

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 37 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Sounds like something a band nerd would say.

[–] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

I mean, I am the nerd you think I am. But that doesn't have anything to do with playing trombone

Can confirm, was band nerd, played trombone, have said line (jokingly) to partners. Been circular breathing for all 4 years of marriage so far.

[–] Uniquitous@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

Surely you've heard about that one time at band camp

[–] HeartyBeast@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ll have you know euphonium players make more sensitive lovers.

Trombone players know nothing about fingering.

[–] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah but we do know about long strokes

[–] HeartyBeast@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Well played, sir.

Didn't Kirk keep beating Spock in Space Chess? Keep in mind Spock calculated how to time travel by flying real fast around the Sun in his head.

There's a reason why Spock has the upmost respect for Kirk. He finds his big brain to be fascinating.

The comparison next to the First officer is intriguing. Fascinating, you might say. Or, what the hell are we gonna do now.

[–] unreachable@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

i never thought any of those things one way or the other

but the explanation is pretty much plausible indeed

I have to rethink a lot right now...

Now I want a crossover where one of the Star Trek crews comes across the planet where Shrek and Donkey live and interact with them.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah. The Doctor.

[–] Pancito@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I like big butts and I cannot lie...

Don't give those Very Short Treks writers any more ideas

[–] setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Riker is a Mr. Smithers to Picard’s Mr. Burns.

[–] Lemmylemmylemmy@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Please do not disrespect the trombone.
