Rats are awesome pets. If only they lived longer.

Though I will concede, surprise wild rats would be problematic.

I wish I didn’t have an easier time empathizing with animals than I did people; rats are so friggin’ cute

Hell if I watch an ant long enough I’ll find them cute too. Wiping dirt off their little antennae 🥺

I’m probably gonna die getting bit by a rabid raccoon as I try to pet them.

"Aw, isn't that cute? He's trying to claw my eyes out!"

there are worse ways to go

The dichotomy of me: I have always wanted pet rats. I have also lived in a home with a horrible rat infestation. Like, to the point where whole sections of wall have been missing from them chewing them. Keep the food in plastic totes instead of cabinets, and they still chew through the totes. Wild rats, while the same species, are truly horrible to live with them. Not their fault. They're still adorable, intelligent little creatures. But good God does it absolutely suck to have them free ranging themselves in your walls

Consider mason jars for the pantry. Expensive but sometimes you can get a bunch from craigslist or garage sales or thrift stores.

Oh that was a big part of it. Thankfully, we no longer have to deal with a rat infestation, not in a long time. But I still keep all my mason jars and jelly jars. Lol. Öld habits. They're also great in lieu of Tupperware, and depending on the type and how much you fill them, they're freezer safe. I love my mason jars and cast iron lol

I love it too. Standardized lids and jars make everything so much tidier, and reducing plastic leach is probably a good thing :)

Oh no, not another window!

... into the bathroom.

You have to keep thinks in metal containers. I used to keep dog food in a small metal garbage can with a handle that keeps the lid super tight.

I had a lot of mice (wooded lot) and between dog food and home brewing grains, I had to be very diligent. And I found a great company that did pest exclusion.

surprise wild rats

Found my new band name.

Hey man, they’re your rats, not mine.

Either start charging them rent or give me a discount for their upkeep. My rental agreement didn’t include a whole colony of roommates.

maybe they can train them to eat the landlord 😆

Just another day in New York, I guess? IDK I'm in Chicago, our rats are big enough to qualify as cryptids.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

my grandmother grew up in Chicago and said the rats were as big as the politicians.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish them. Three rats in a trenchcoat once got elected as an Alderman and nobody noticed for 7 months.

Fuck landlords

At least it's not Joe's apartment.

Rats > Roaches

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

I lived in a shitty apartment in East Hollywood a few years back. Wish I took a closer look at the cabinetry before moving in because I saw little German roaches in every possible nook and cranny. Little bits of them were smashed up inside hinges, drawer rails, and even underneath the kitchen overhangs. The manager said it was my fault for not thoroughly inspecting the apartment before moving in. He had to concede later when rats decided to move in and shit all over my books. I once found a big fat one chilling on my dining room chair spine and do an unsuccessful jump to the kitchen cabinets before retreating to its hiding hole behind the dishwasher.

Frankly both rats and roaches suck.
