Babel is a historical fantasy fiction story written by the etymology researcher R.F. Kuang. It has a really cool magic system where inscribing translations onto silver bars creates effects in the world. It's full of a lot of cool etymology research, and I recommend it to anyone here!

Really good book! The magic system was refreshing (I read a lot of fantasy), it was well written, and and intelligence of the author shines through.

Oh I just finished her novel Yellowface and thought it was incredible but I don't normally go for fantasy so I was wavering over getting this.

But you may have changed my mind, thanks! πŸ™‚

FWIW it really doesn’t feel like fantasy, really just feels more like thoughtful historical fiction with colonial power abstracted away into silver bars and the source of economic power placed into the hands of translators
