So, can we talk about how the show just injected an incredibly overpowered character into the MCU in the last half of an episode of a series that not many people are watching?

Or how Fury's plan was to give the uber-mcguffin to someone else to give to the bad guy in the hopes that she could get super powered along with him and proceed to kill him on equal footing?

I wanted to like this show, but damn. Fury was a way better character before this started.

[–] NuPNuA@lemm.ee 9 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Comics introduce and forget about overpowered characters all the time, it's nothing new.

The Fury story was more Nick Fury's Secret War than Secret Invasion in the end. The whole Nick does something in secret that ends up threatening the whole world is straight from that book.

[–] Shonzi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Man, Secret War with Nick Fury sending heroes (or in this case maybe skrulls) to infiltrate Latveria against diplomatic policy (maybe as a home on earth instead of suspicion of doom), and it being revealed that Nick had done this AND mind wiped his insurgents. All as a means to introduce DOOM. That would have been an INFINITELY better Bendis script to adapt to this show... Now I'm sad that I've had this thought.

That was a complete waste of time and I'm pretty sure there's a better way to set the world on fire. This was the one series that I was looking forward to and I must say was truly a disappointment. The last two episodes should've been released as one, though not sure it would've been better. The writing was lazy throughout and all over the place, I mean who the hell leaves cliffhangers using a death of a major character almost every episode? Who the hell at Marvel Studios vetted the scripts?

How does this tie into the Multiverse?!!

The only positive is Sonya Falsworth, and I'm just praying some other show or film will come along to use this character properly.

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Absolute same, I had such high hopes for this series and it was just a steaming pile of dogs hit. Agree on Farnsworth, the only saving grace of the series, she stole every scene she was in. Everything else has just been so scatter-brained about this series, just things happening for no purpose other than to setup the next thing happening, without any regard to logic. I can’t decide if this was worse than Game of Thrones season 8. Everything felt so stupid and I had to force myself through every episode, just cringing the whole time. So glad it’s over and I can just cancel my D+ subscription now.

[–] NuPNuA@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Having the Falsworths introduced at least gives us hope for a Union Jack casting somewhere. I still can't believe we had a espionage focused series, with tons of stuff set in the UK without my man Pete Wisdom being introduced.

So why did none of the stored prisoners suffer any radiation damage? They were just lead out in the open there and some of them were kept there a long time.

Aside from that the rest of it was just bad.

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Exactly, how come all those people did not suffer from radiation poisoning?

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

:(

At least Olivia Coleman was a highlight

[–] thisisdee@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

She's amazing. Wasted on a mediocre show but hopefully we see her again soon.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I really hope so, she's too good if a character to leave in the dustbin.

[–] Tillyrblue@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This was the first Marvel show that I disliked. Everything was so uninteresting and poorly done. That final Super Skrull battle was one of the worst fights in the MCU. They should’ve never compared this to Winter Soldier because it was far from it. Only good thing I can say about this show is how Sam Jackson managed to have a few good acting scenes with terrible scripts.

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

The bones of it were good. It was just so, so underbaked and half-assed. Like everything else, that big fight could have been great with just a few adjustments. Imagine if G'iah found him in the facility and secretly freed him, and he calls in the suit to even the odds just as Gravik looks about to win? Instead it's a quick battle with no well-defined stakes, that nobody sees.

The reveal that Ritson is a genocidal douche canoe could have been dropped earlier, giving Fury some conflict in whether he actually wants to save him or help him.

The confrontation between Gravik and Fury was really compelling, but again, it happened far too late to make any difference. Almost everything in this episode should have happened in episode 1, and then we could be playing out the consequences of it. Instead it's five episodes of buildup to a nothingburger, with the implications of major consequences we don't get to see until - when? The Marvels? Unlikely. Brave New World? Maybe, but then why bother with this series at all? Just for a prologue to a big movie? What's the actual story here?

Marvel has been really missing the mark on their television shows and many of the recent movies. They really need to take some time and reevaluate before damaging the brand. I don't believe in super hero fatigue but I do believe in bad content fatigue.

[–] thisisdee@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The show feels like it's...half done. Like the Secret Invasion is basically just about 1 Skrull who wants war? It's supposed to be invasion in our whole lives right? How about all the Skrulls who've been in society and high in government? Was that not the invasion that we were supposed to watch? Who cares about this Gravik guy really...

I don't understand Ritson's response at the end. War...against aliens on earth? Shouldn't people be somewhat comfortable by now with aliens on earth? Are they gonna try to kill Thor next time he's on earth? And he says "we know how to find you" even though they really don't? The only thing that I thought might make sense is if he's also a Skrull somehow but is he just another dumbass human president? And Fury fucks off back to space when the war is started by humans now? As long as it's not a Skrull starting it I guess a war is fine...

[–] DoctorTYVM@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They threw together so many different plot elements like super skrulls and Fury's wife and outer planet politics and the history of skrulls and being a spy genre and fury being old and on and on

Too much stuff, not enough time to let any of it work together. Now we have a new world war starting, an interplanetary peace summit, SABER, and a new ultra super powerful being. That's so much world altering stuff. Will any of it be addressed in the next movies?

[–] thisisdee@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s so much world altering stuff.

Yeah that's how I felt too. There's so much but the whole show seems to be focusing on just 1 small part of it, and it feels like at the end they resolved nothing.

[–] DoctorTYVM@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Remember the giant statue of a being appearing in the ocean? Or the equally giant figure who appeared briefly over London? That's just one movie and they've never addressed it again.

[–] canthidium@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There's a rumor going around that the celestial in the ocean from Eternals is going to be a plot point in Captain America: New World Order, but who knows.

I was so surprised that there wasn't a reveal after Ritson's speech that he was actually a skrull and that he was purposely ruining any chance of peace to continue Gravik's crusade. But no, just terrible writing and inexplicable character choices.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The editing in the scene where “Fury” meets Gravik is really bad…

I tried really hard to like this show and I’m really only coming up with, “enh, it’s ok.”

I am glad that it didn’t end on, “No more Skrulls! Fury pulled it off all by himself!”

Will the Skrull problem be acknowledged anywhere else?

There’s too many dangling threads right now and I don’t see how they’re going to pull them all together. I hope they do though.

I feel like Marvel’s spread themselves too thin. I’m still enjoying the ride for the most part, but the quality just isn’t what it used to be. I believe this to be the result of Disney needing to push out content for Disney+. Hopefully they slow it down and the quality comes back.

A season 2 of this show could still have a lot of potential.

I hope Rhodey looses more body parts and the War Machine suit makes him a full-on cyborg like in that one comic run.

There you go. That’s my attempt at positivity.

[–] canthidium@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that was...something. Felt so rushed. That super Skrull fight was just a mess. Why is there never any Secret Service or any staff besides Rhodey around the president? He seems like he could be killed any time. And I guess Secret Wars is kicked off because the president said he will kill every Skrull. Like, that's it? This is how Secret Wars gets started? Just feels silly and basic. At this point I'm only watching these shows so I know the setup for the upcoming movies. Very underwhelming and disappointing.

[–] NuPNuA@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Secret Wars has nothing to do with the Skull plot. That's the arc that will end the multiverse plot in the films presumably in a similar way to the 2015 miniseries but with Kang as the leader of Battleword rather than Doom.

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I liked it well enough. It seems like people were expecting an Avengers level story and it was just fine. Colman was fantastic. The brutal scenes were nice to see. The president's final speech was a surprise, but realistic. I'm curious if the new super-Skrull will show up again in the future.

Also, how long was Rhodes in there? They said he had been there awhile.

Also, it was nice to see a Skull trick another Skrull.

[–] cvozbosher@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Rhodes also seemed to be the only one physically affected. Like his muscles had atrophied. I also found that curious.

[–] hyperhopper@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Realistic? Did he forget all about new asgard and all of the asgardians that are living on earth? Or that Earth's biggest hero might be captain marvel, a kree hybrid? Or all the footage of him literally being saved by a skrull?

Also, how long was Rhodes in there? They said he had been there awhile.

Either rhodes was in there before endgame, in which case a skrull went to a habitable planet, came back, and didn't tell anybody. OR a skrull read his memories so well that he could take over as rhodes, and also decided not to tell anybody about the garden planet.

This show makes no sense.

I think the biggest mistake the show did was making it so clear who's a Skrull and who's real so early on. A secret invasion like this needs paranoia and hopelessness and I just didn't feel that.

[–] Acamon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yup, I like a lot of the performances in this show (a testament to the quality of actors that marvel has been able to pull in to these things) but the overall plotting, themes and structure was a complete mess.

Shape-shifting skulls! Exciting! But we'll almost never use this!

They can be anyone they want! But they'll just keep to the same form 99% of the time for vague reasons!

No-one knows who to trust But they they'll make no effort to try and figure who's a skrull even once they know that their blood is a different colour. But that's fine, because the skrulls won't try and trick anyone too much.

Total waste of a premise.

[–] canthidium@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

They can be anyone they want! But they’ll just keep to the same form 99% of the time for vague reasons!

Exactly! They should have been changing into different people all the time. Even within the Skrulls. Like I feel like Gravik should have been spying on his people in different forms, he obviously didn't trust them all. Terminator 2 had more suspense and paranoia with just 1 shapeshifter.

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

G'iah's greatest superpower is her ability to regenerate that amazing leather jacket after she's shredded the sleeves with her Hulk/Drax/Corvus/Groot arms.

[–] NuPNuA@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Isn't the jacket part of her body?

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, Skrulls are actually naked all the time. Now I’m trying to remember if Priscilla’s clothes changed with her in that last scene… it would make sense for her to be dressed because she’s not trying to do espionage stuff.

This show was underwhelming.

[–] Wooly@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I never got passed ep 2 but this doesn't fill me with confidence in watching the rest. Why does everything marvel make now have to be a big nothing burger?

[–] nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

don't bother, totally not worth it.

[–] CeruleanRuin@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not like it's a big investment. Six 30-minute episodes? This should have been a two- or three-part Marvel Special Presentation, released all in one go and done with. Either that or give it full episode lengths and some writers who can actually grapple with a compelling espionage narrative. Instead it got a weird middle ground that just felt crippled from the start.

[–] nudnyekscentryk@szmer.info 2 points 1 year ago

it definitely started off strong

[–] Acamon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I actually partially enjoyed it, watching Fury / Talos, or fury / wifey chatting was good. But it doesn't really go anywhere, and the central conflict is kinda pointless, so meh. But as background tv with low expectations, sure!

[–] Kittengineer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Maria Hill died for this

[–] TheQuietCroc@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

They wasted the Secret Invasion on this crap. We could have had a really cool mystery series that culminated into something grand, but instead they ran out of budget cuz they just wanted another motor match CGI fight.

[–] Catpocalypse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Just finished up and I liked the spy thriller premise but it does rank lowest in my D+ series ranking. The entire thing feels like a setup, but for... (fill in the blank with not a waste of time at some point in the future please)?

Ritson's response is painfully USian, so it tracked for me, but it's like globally, aliens aren't a new concept so... Why?

So daft that you can't somehow differentiate between good aliens and bad aliens and given that the globe is already dealing with the blip fallout and repatriation efforts a million seems like such a miniscule number, so, who cares?

G'iah as super-super-super powered individual seems too much to me, even as I was accepting that Gravik had cracked the ability to get some powers, it still wasn't an end all be all issue. Now you've introduced some potential meta-threat that's just tacked on the end of one of the weaker D+ series and for what? Like what is going to be done with this character or is she just going to be shuffled off and sidelined?

I don't like the way that the series just did away with established characters (Hill especially, Talos because wholesome AF, liked him) so casually, though. Like the deaths felt they lacked any real weight to them. They felt like just things.

I do like Varra. So, so much I like her. I doubt she'll ever show up again but for what it's worth, I like her.

I feel for the Skull plight. I just wish that they'd gotten better than this. Surely there is more to it than Gravik vs. Talos/Fury.

Maybe whatever it's setting up will make it something I want to watch again in the future, but for now, sadly, one watch was enough.
