Johnny Cash not being on the right side of this meme should be criminal.

Well, you wonder why
I always dress in black
Why you never see
Bright colors on my back
And why does my appearance
Seem to have a somber tone?
Well, there's a reason for the things
That I have on

I wear the black
For the poor and the beaten down
Livin' in the hopeless
Hungry side of town
I wear it for the prisoner
Who has long paid for his crime
But is there because
He's a victim of the times

The girl's musicians are folk, not country. That's kind of the main purpose of the distinction.

[–] Johnmannesca@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Thank you, thanks especially for saving me two paragraphs of rant.

After 9/11, Country turned from "we are working people" to "My Dad's an oil tycoon and I love the US".

This is where a lot of Americana music comes in ... the online station Americana Boogie Radio has lots of defiant working class songs on it's playlist :-)

[–] meyotch@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, that’s a good one.

Boot Liquor on SomaFM is full of working people music, with an emphasis on the drinkin and dyin side of the genre.

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 22 hours ago

Boot Liquor is a new one on me, thanks for the tip :-)

that was around the same time local radio collapsed and I heart radio and other conglomerates took over. not long after media ownership rules changed. I don't think it was the artists who changed.

There are two types of country artists. One will help you hide a body and run from the cops. The other will call you a slur.

Try meeting a girl like that in a small town.

[–] Willy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

challenge accepted! finally a reason to visit a small town!

Country music is the lowest form of "art" on the planet. Braindead flag-waving bullshit.

[–] countrypunk@slrpnk.net 2 points 10 hours ago

Bullshit. There's a bunch of different subgenres of country. Stadium country is the kind that most people are referencing when they say they hate country music. I'm quite fond of old country.

[–] mechoman444@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

There's good country music. Most of Stevie nicks for example.

Also there's blue grass which is what most people think country should be before they listen to the modern mainstream crap.

I will never, ever, apologize for liking Billy Strings, Michael Cleveland, or Doc Watson.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

Townes van Zandt is one of the best musicians who ever lived

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee -1 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

someone never listened to country before

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I hooked up with someone who had her radio set to country music and heard these lyrics three our four times within a few days (the theme was if the singer had a million dollars):

I would buy a boat. I would buy a truck to pull it.

If that isn't braindead, I don't know what is.

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago

listening to manufactored pop music and thinking its the entire genre is the most braindead thing you can do. like saying rap only talks about shooting people and stealing and bitches and had no other possible social comments

[–] db2@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That's like saying I'm an atheist because I haven't read the bible. 🙄

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 0 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

you sound like those 60 year old boomers calling rap music gangster crap 😂 thats who you want to emulate? really?

[–] db2@lemmy.world 0 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Sure thing, kiddo. Do your parents know you're making stupid arguments on the internet?

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 0 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

[–] macaw_dean_settle@lemmy.world 0 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

[–] BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee 2 points 21 hours ago
