You would have to think of the user and the comm they post on separately. If a user is prone to spam/trolling then the home instance has every right to not host them, which would then have the knock on effect that they vanish from other places because that user no longer exists. It could be that the home instance got several reports saying the person was an issue.

It looks like they had been banned from a community a week and a half ago and then banned completely yesterday. I can't find any other bans.
They certainly had a lot of political hot takes, some popular some not. Account was a month old, so they may be a ban evader.
I did find this comment, but again, I can't tell what it's in referrence to.
My mindset is that if they're following the rules of my communities what they do outside of those communities is their own business.
My communities are a place for people to post their shared experiences. The more people can humanize each other, the less they will act out.
I'm not quite clear all the details but lemmy.ml is quite prone to banning people there for activities outside of their house.
If they where a .ml user and came onto your instance saying Russia/China/NK are bad that could get them the boot on .ml if they find out about it.
I own !dullsters@dullsters.net and mod !dull_mens_club@lemmy.world so that wouldn't be allowed.
Or maybe something somewhere else, wouldn't matter, if the user is canned from their home instance then they no longer exist to show up on your comm.
Yeah the message is misleading, it always says "mod".
But admins are responsible for their users, no matter where they post. If they're spamming, shouldn't their home instance admin ban their whole account, instead of every other instance having to ban them individually?
I agree that their comments should be deleted automatically, however I did not like the message their comments were replaced with because it implies I banned them. It would also be nice if moderators and admin of other instances could at least be notified. If the user has written a really useful answer to a question or a how to guide then that could disappear forever. Someone else in this thread stated that the comments should be deleted forever. I really don't like the idea of someone having the ability to delete things completely off of my server.
A user's posts and comments are actually stored on their home instance, I believe, and a copy is pushed to your instance during federation.
Indeed I was able to restore their comments. However, it was somewhat of a fluke that I saw what happened.
On the other hand it is a conduit for censorship. If an admin doesn't like what you post on another instance, then they can censor you everywhere.
Such a user can
- Create an account on a different instance
- Spin up their own instance
