NYC here. There are wire racks full of free newspapers all over the New York subway system. Loose newspapers are far more likely to catch fire than bound books.

There used to be loads of free newspapers on the tube too, but that's much less of a thing now that everyone is online instead. The Evening Standard went online only, and the Metro doesn't seem to have traction either.

Nostalgia alert. Talking about newspapers on subways reminded me of this book I read as a child. It features a newsstand in the biggest NYC subway station.
