Non-human animals literally can't have gender to us as it is a social construct for humans.
There's a list of experiments. They mostly sound pretty standard, looking at the effects of various (hormone, etc.) medications on things like breast cancer, reproduction, etc. Tons and tons of medical experiments covering all sorts of different things are carried out each year. And they're a big part of why the USA has long been a leader in drug and medical research.

All of this needs to be, for the same reason what Nazi Germany did should be remembered. Humans are dumb fucks and WILL do this again (after the US collapse, I mean), but maybe it will be held it off for a bit longer.

The underlying cause is they are more emotional driven than the baseline human, I think. We're all emotional, but I feel like some people really let the truthiness gutfeel of emotions rule the day and facts are just not that important to them.
Pick like any of those and you see they had a choice between feelings that make them feel smart or part of an in-group, or facts that made the world clash with their beliefs. And because they're kind of fools and cowards, they go with the feel-good most of the time.
