This is Music Production. A place to share anything and everything you want about your music making journey! Learning is the goal, so discussion is encouraged!

RIP Waveform.

Rules are as follows:

  1. Don't share other people's music without commentary, analysis or questions. This is not a music discovery community.
  2. No elitism or bigotry towards other people's music tastes. Be polite in disagreement.

I will update rules as necessary, but I promise we'll stay light on them and only add new ones after discussion!

Here are some useful examples of what a great post would be about:

(in no particular order)

  1. Stuff you made/are making. Get valuable feedback and criticism!
  2. Learning resources - videos, articles, posts on any topic concerning a production process, be it composition, sound design, sampling, mixing, mastering, DAW workflow or any other.
  3. Free plugins, presets and samplepacks. Giveaways and self-made stuff included!
  4. News about production software, releases and personalities.
  5. Questions and general advice about music production.
  6. Essays on your favorite productions. Inspirations and insights!
  7. Your physical analog gear! Let us know how it performs!

Good to know: As a general word of caution, avoid posting complete compositions, mixes and tracks on the internet before backing them up on a remote and reputable server. Even small snippets or watermarked tracks should be posted AFTER backing it up to cloud. Timestamps from cloud services will help you in case of theft. And, as a public resource, lemmy is not a safe place to post your unpublished work, so please make sure your work is protected.

i like how the top line is righty and bottom is lefty. Can you write two different words at the same time?

Cute labels like 'annoying' and 'hard to listen to'. Is it purposely like that or what's the story there?

Will listen with headphones when I grab them later. actual music feedback then.

thank you for sharing!

Those labels came from when I was editing the synth settings and the Triple Oscillator has a tendency to be WAY too loud because it mixes all three channels as 100% + 100% + 100% instead of 33% + 33% + 33%, so it kept blowing my ears out when I was putting new ones in lol

Yeah such a nice feeling ! Especially the second track Repetitions, it's nostalgic, and it's got a 90s French Touch feel to it. I really like the "minimalist" synth and sound approach, it makes for a really simple mix that just gels together really well, with the nice wide pans. This could be fun to play live !

What was the the game jam like ? I've never done one !

It was a little one for a discord server, they were quite forgiving on the time frame so the process was fairly relaxed. I mostly do programming so that's generally what I focused on.

Also I've been listening to a lot of of my 70's and 80's cassette collection so some of that early synth sound is rubbing off on me I think

What's the discord server if you don't mind me asking ? I've got a friend that does film scoring and is starting to get into video game music, so game jams would be fun. I'm thinking of trying it out as well.

Do you know VCV Rack ? It's a free virtual modular synth program, it's great fun for synth based music and sound design.

Ah it's not particularly a serious game dev server, it was just one of the many passing events on a public trans server. Itchio has a list of currently active game jams and teams if they're interested in looking there.

And yeah I have heard of VCV, I'm actually doing the hard route and building my own eurorack setup from scratch, like schematic and perfboard kinda scratch so it's taking a while to get enough experience to make a reliable module (I had about 5 done and dusted when I accidentally exploded them but that's a story for a different time.)

Thanks I’ll check out itchio !

DIY Eurorack sounds like a lot of fun. Do you design the schematics or find pre-existing ones and recreate them ? As much as I like hardware, I’ve never got into modular because of the cost. I think semi-modular synths and/or vcv is a good compromise, but I’m intrigued by diy modular, I’ve done a bit of diy effect pedals which was fun.

I've been using some schematics I've dug up from the 90's internet, most of the hard part is learning the dark magic rituals you need to perform in order to make sense of how the things actually function, it's very complicated and I was way in over my head when I started, but after a few years of failing a whole lot I've gotten somewhere lol

Nice, sounds like lots of fun and trial and error. Hope you get your modular set up, I’m sure it’ll be really rewarding in the end
