The Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick, per Shams

Edit: Full trade:

  • Lakers: Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris

  • Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 LAL 1st

  • Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 Clippers 2nd, 2025 Mavericks 2nd”

Edit: need stern do come back and veto this for “basketball reasons” Mavs GM deserves to get fired for this one

Klay, probably one of the most impacted players or one of the few that, understanding the robbery, spoke: Luka to LA is like Bron to Miami

[–] David_Eight@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I was watching ESPN today (first time in a long time) and they were legit acting like this might be a good thing for Dallas, how Luka is kinda fat, and it could improve their chances blah blah blah. I just felt like I was being gaslight by an entire sports network, like wtf are they talking about LMAO.

Dallas got robbed and Pelinka might be a sith lord with the mind tricks he pulled on Nico. There is no fucking way the Mavs get to the finals this year or any time in the near future, 0.

[–] David_Eight@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This dude just bought a 15 million dollar house, just closed it last week in Dallas. Apparently he cried when he found out. - Chandler Parsons

And they cost him over 100m from loosing the supermax. Now the Mavs are spreading rumors how Luka is fat and difficult to deal with in the media.

Luka got traded out of sheer pettiness, Mavs are just a trash organization now SMH

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

The Mavs as an org may never recover from this. What star wants to play for a team that does this to the player that took them to the finals.

[–] burble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why the fuck would they do that

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

not everyone in the NBA is smart.

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The only reason that would make sense to me is that Luka is such a diva or an asshole behind the scenes that the organization wanted to get rid of him asap. But it still doesn’t make any sense to let him go for AD and 1 FRP when most of the contending teams would gladly give so much more for him.

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Kyrie was a known asshole and diva, and the Mavs had no problem trading for him. The only way this makes sense is if tomorrow we find out Luka was point shaving.

[–] scytale@lemm.ee 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The NBA should win an emmy for best drama lmao. That joke about it being a soap opera for men really is true.

[–] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

more drama than in WWE

What a weird way to find out Luka has a drug addiction. (That's the only way this make sense. )

[–] imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Worst trade in professional sports since Babe Ruth went to the Yankees 🤯

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 14 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It really is lol like the justification is that Luka has conditioning issues and is injured so instead of going to any other team they just go to the lakers and trade for an older more injury prone AD and 1 pick lol

[–] Lootboblin@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago (2 children)

It feels like the Mavs didn’t even explore the market. If you trade away 25 year old generational talent (even little bit overweight) the return should be more than that. Weird af trade.

Red Sox couldn’t afford Babe so they traded him away. Mavs didn’t want to pay Luka supermax so they traded him away.

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 15 points 4 days ago (3 children)

No idea why the Mavs do this, was Luka unhappy?

[–] Death__BySnuSnu@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (3 children)

This had to have been fixed by the league. There's absolutely NOTHING in this for the Mavs. Horrible, horrible trade!

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 16 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Like the nets got 5 firsts for bridges, the jazz got 5 for Gobert, how is this the best you got for Luka? NO ONE KNEW HE WAS EVEN AVAILABLE

Everything I’m seeing right now is saying he didn’t ask out either, I’m not even a Mavs fan and it feels like a gut punch lol

This feels like a league trade for ratings. How else can you explain it? This is such an incredibly lopsided trade. With the league ratings having been down for so long, they had to do something to get their prime markets back. Next up, Giannis to the Knicks for the NY pizza rat and a carton of milk from the nearest bodega.

[–] imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I feel so bad for you, my condolences.

That's exactly what I was thinking as a Knicks fan, like we gave 5 firsts for Mikal and it only takes ONE for fucking Doncic??? He's a 25 year old walking triple double, perennial MVP candidate.

And of course it had to be the Lakers who get another franchise player for the next decade basically for free. Fuck sake.

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I mean AD is worth a few firsts as well but yes it is still an underpay for what they could have gotten in a bidding war.

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

don't forget "the league" is the owners, why would the other 28 owners be okay with fixing such a closed transaction with no chance at Luka themselves? it's not fixed, sometimes people just do dumb shit.

I mean, there is no other possible explanation right? I'm a life long Lakers fan and this makes no sense.

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They didn't get much back either.

[–] David_Eight@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I think if they were the same age you could argue defense blah blah blah. But they're not lol.

Christie and what will probably be a late first round pick? Like you guys don't want nothing else? Is this a prank lol? Ok

[–] Jackcooper@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Here to join the chorus that the Mavs are idiots

[–] Mars2k21@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Surprised the NBA didn't veto this one like they did with CP3 and the Lakers

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 3 points 3 days ago

I think we'll never see a veto again

On a day where Trump seems to have caused trillion dollars worth of damage Nico seemed to have one upped him. Bravo

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

lol the fat fuck is going to LA like all the conspiracy theorists said!!! OMG

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Like even if he wanted out and would only resign with the Lakers how do you not get a better return?

[–] TAG@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Some team would still trade good pieces for him in hope of hanging up a banner and convincing him to stay. The Raptors tried to give Kawhi Stockholm Syndrome.

[–] RandAlThor@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lakers robbed Dallas. Silver twisted Cuban's arms to do this.

[–] TrippyFocus@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Didn’t Cuban sell recently or did I imagine that?

Must have some blackmail on him then since this is the worst trade I’ve seen in my life

Are the Lakers now allowed to play with 2 balls? both for James and Luka.

  • Shams Charania: The Mavericks approached the Lakers recently and offered Luka Doncic, sources tell ESPN. Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old Doncic has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Anthony Davis a win-now move in Dallas.https://xcancel.com/ShamsCharania/status/1885925196650963331

  • Bobby Marks: There are major financial implications for Luka Doncic with this trade. He was in line to receive a five-year $345M contract this summer. Doncic is no longer super max eligible.https://xcancel.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1885922284071702954

  • Tim McMahon: "I believe that defense wins championships,” Mavs GM Nico Harrison told ESPN regarding his motivation to trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future."https://xcancel.com/espn_macmahon/status/1885922718333181992

  • Tim McMahon: The Mavs had major concerns about moving forward with Luka Doncic due to his constant conditioning issues and the looming commitment of another supermax contract extension this summer, sources told ESPN.https://xcancel.com/espn_macmahon/status/1885924010669621271

Are you telling me that the Lakers are getting Luka on a discounted salary on top of getting him in the first place? It's that what this means?

[–] skhayfa@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

From ESPN "Though Doncic was relatively svelte by his standards when he reported to camp, his weight ballooned to the high 260s early this season, sources said. He sat out five games in late November, when the Mavs listed him with a sprained right wrist, an extended absence to allow Doncic to focus on his conditioning. He had a similar early-season layoff in the 2022-23 season.

Doncic was in line to receive a five-year, $345 million contract this summer but because of the trade, he is no longer eligible for a super max deal, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks."
