The decision by the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, this week to resign as head of the Liberal party has set in motion a leadership race against the backdrop of a looming general election, which will be held amid political turmoil triggered by Donald Trump’s “America first” economic nationalism. It has also given Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, an opportunity to inject himself into yet another country’s political turmoil.

Since Trudeau’s resignation on Monday, Musk has posted repeatedly about Canadian politics on X – the platform formerly known as Twitter he bought in 2022 for $44bn. He has praised clips of Pierre Poilievre, the leader of Canada’s Conservative party, while relishing in Trudeau’s downfall and engaging with rightwing Canadian influencers.

“Girl, you’re not the governor (sic) of Canada anymore, so doesn’t matter what you say,” Musk tweeted in response in the middle of the night on Tuesday.

God JT needs to give election Canada teeth before he goes, because right now if musk decides to come in and fuck with the election and prop up a party, there isn't much that they will do about it.

I think he should cause it’s great for the nation, but why would he (like personally)

All this time people just kept asking him to leave and now he is leaving… and we get to find out why people hated Trudeau and how those problems will persist after him.

Because he presumably isn't so vindictive, and because he presumably cares about the nation, hopefully?

He has no right to interfere with our politics. He chose to be american.

Of course Canada is moving towards fascism. It’s not because conservatives are maneuvering so well. It’s because the liberals are also moving further right towards fascism, and NDP are too corrupt and incompetent to offer a meaningful alternative (and NDP leadership coordinates with the liberals to keep it that way).

Just look at who the liberals are throwing in as potential replacements: a bunch of pro-corporate goons even farther right than Trudeau. All while the liberals raise the entry fee and requirements to ensure only a corporate backed candidate can even run. There’s some growing support for Freeland to be the pick, even though she’s literally been linked to far-right Nazis in multiple scandals.

Fascism will win because the entire charade has already been rigged to ensure that’s the only possible outcome.

Do you have any source on this?

I thought the problem with the NDP is that they never have the votes because we don’t have proportional representations so they can’t do anything but sway liberals sometimes.

I don’t see how NDP can do anything without winning first.

Exactly. They don’t get the votes precisely because of their incompetence and coordination with the liberals.

People want a leftist alternative, but the NDP serves as more of an extension of the liberals to absorb and control activist energy. A party meant to absorb and depress leftism cannot simultaneously use it to gain momentum.

This guy is gonna be the whole world's problem until we collectively shun him into Russia or something.

The problem (well one of them) with billionaires, is that you can't really "exile" them. They exist outside of national boundaries, and are sort of nations in and of themselves. This is why they don't bother following the laws of the nation they reside in.

I'm not sure it would even be possible to do this unless we could literally strip him of all of his wealth. Which I imagine would prove difficult (but I'm all for it).

The west sanctions oligarchs all of the time. The problem is they never sanction their own, because the rich own the politicians with the power to do it.

It’s almost like there really is a global elite causing tons of problems, and they’ve spent the last +8 years to dupe one side. That way, when it is true, the people on the left look crazy, and we continue an unnecessary class war while a bunch of selfish people destroy the human race so a line go brrr or whatever.

I fucking hate it here, and I have a reasonably good life. I’m tired. Everyone is lying and screaming at one another. And there’s no truth. This is all done for humans to jock for power rather than see each other as one species.
