Several months back, when I told my sister that one of the reasons I'm planning on moving out of South Carolina is because where I'm moving to (Puerto Rico) has a medical weed program that I'm eligible for since I have Autism and ADHD, she told me that medical weed was laced with fentanyl.

My friend and her friend were in a lobby online. We were playing a game and waiting for others to log on. While we waited i said i was gonna mute them to smoke a bowl, and my friend's friend started going off on how awful weed is, like how it'll kill you if it doesn't make you go blind first. I laughed and asked how old they were?

"14."

"And, have you ever tried weed?"

"FUCK NO! GROSS!"

And i say "cool. I don't take sex advice from virgins."

After the screeching subsided, that kid decided he had other, more important things to do that day, and logged off. I finished my bowl. The world continued.

And then everyone clapped. Their name? Alberts Einstein.

This story makes you both look like absolute morons.

"You can't be allergic to weed, it's literally medicine."

Many years ago at a wedding reception someone brought a plate of magic brownies. They were clearly marked, everyone knew what they were.

An elderly relative who had never smoked in her life got into them. Before she started she was warned what they were. Nobody wanted to be the person who fed straight-laced grandma the weed, right?

She said, "It's okay, I don't do drugs so they won't affect me."

I don't know what she thought doing drugs looked like, but boy howdy did she learn

[–] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

what lmao. she lost me at step 1

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 1 points 1 hour ago

apparently grandma thought drugs needed consent to work. Somehow.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was taught by a police officer in grade 4 that if you try weed, even just once, you will never be happy again. If you score a goal in soccer, you won’t feel good about it. If you do well on a test, you won’t be happy. They straight up told us that weed floods your happiness receptors and burns them all out, leaving you to never feel happy again.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jokes on him. That happened to me LONG before I started smoking weed.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

It's natural therefore it has no negative effects.

It's also been bred to be waaay stronger over the last couple decades. I see a fair amount of weed-induced psychosis rolling through inpatient, or at the very least weed-exacerbated psychosis. Way worse than the psychosis is the hyper-emesis syndrome. One of the characteristic symptoms is "scromiting" (Scream-Vomiting).

It's better for you than alcohol. That's not a high bar. A light mauling from a black bear is also better for you than alcohol. It's waaay better for you than cigarettes but also most brain cancer starts out as lung cancer and I'll let you follow the rest of that on your own. Most of my substance abuse patients who are hooked on shit like fentanyl and meth also tell me that nicotine is the hardest drug to quit.

Weed's not the worst. It's still drugs though.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

A light mauling from a black bear is also better for you than alcohol.

hyperbole when discussing medical shit does no good for anyone, and if you're confident in this opinion maybe ask a doctor or get mauled by a bear yourself.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

nicotine is the hardest drug to quit.

Wild. I've quit smoking multiple times, and thought the first week or so was unpleasant each time, but not awful. Each time I started up again it was because my ex-spouse started smoking again and was pushing cigarettes on me. Since the divorce a decade ago, I haven't had a cigarette. And that was after about fifteen years of smoking around a pack and a half a day.

I know that quitting drinking all at once can straight up kill you, if you're a hardcore alcoholic; I've known a few people that had the shakes every time they were sober.

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Some people quit really easy, while others will go mad at the thought of it.

My grandpa used to smoke, and one day just put down his last cigarette and never touched it again. Meanwhile, my grandma probably tried to quit 20 times, but the withdrawal was so bad she was never able to quit.

[–] Breezy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

Oof what? You must never have smoked a lot despitewhat you say. Because ive tried to quit a few times and ive only been smoking for 8 years, but every time after about a week i start coughing almost constantly. And the only thing to ease it wad smoking again.

[–] ChronosTriggerWarning@lemmy.world 0 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I quit could turkey twice. It was easy. I just focused on how much i hated the taste and smell.

The only reason i started up again the second time is because when you work as a server, you get a smoke break constantly but nonsmoker's don't, and i got sick of covering three sections every hour.

[–] Breezy@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

It was easy? Thats why you had to quit twice.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Fun fact! Nicotine paralyzes your cilia.

Your cilia are a layer of fine hairlike structures that coat most of your respiratory tract. They whip / beat together rhythmically to push debris filled mucous up and out of your respiratory tract to your pharynx where it can be expelled by coughing or swallowed and processed by your digestive tract. When you smoke, they're paralyzed, allowing debris to build up (and man is there a lot of debris, on account of, y'know, the smoking).

About a week after you quit they wake up and yell,"WHAT THE FUCK IS ALL THIS SHIT?" Imagine if somebody came into your job and roofied you, smeared diarrhea all over the walls, then left. You'd be mad too. Give your cilia lots of water to help thin that mucous out and make their job a little easier during that stage.

Also read up on the other stages of quitting, it'll make it much easier once you're expecting these kinds of things.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure I know what I smoked.

I quit because I started coughing up dark brown shit every morning; I always had some kind of congestion in my throat. I decided that I didn't want to do that anymore, so I stopped.

[–] CM400@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Everyone is different, maybe they got lucky. I quit about 15 years ago, and I still have cravings and I’m often smoking in my dreams. Nicotine is the worst.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I got soooo lucky. I smoked a bunch for a bit less than a year. One day, I had my morning cigarette and it felt AWFUL. No pleasure, just debilitation. I tried again the next day, same thing. Since then, I’ve smoked a few times and it’s always a mistake. My brain just stopped liking them.

Unfortunately it did the same thing with caffeine. I really miss coffee.

Weed, too. I miss getting high without feeling like I’m going to die.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Cigarettes, cigars, and pipes still smell wonderful to me, and if was free and wasn't going to kill me, I'd absolutely start again. But I haven't had any real cravings or dreams about smoking since about four months after I quit.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Yeah quitting alcohol will kill you and nicotine is still the hard one for a lot of people. My unofficial psychiatric subspecialty is violence management and nicotine is on my list of top ten reasons people will punch you right in the face along with food, perceived threats to their children, and looking like the person that diddled them as a kid. Interestingly opiate withdrawal actually won't kill you (at least not directly), you'll just wish it did. Benzos and barbituates totally will though they work on the same system as alcohol.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Benzo withdrawal will kill you, but goddamn is it hard to kill yourself with benzodiazepines... You'd think that something with a deadly withdrawal would also be easy to OD on, but no.

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

It’s natural

So is castor seeds.

Some ignorant pastor was raising a fuss about how weed has gotten so much stronger (and thus more dangerous) over the years. Which may be true, to an extent, but his evidence was that pot in the 70s had at most 20% THC, but today's vapes are close to 90% THC.

Vapes are concentrated. 1g of vape can last for weeks, while 1g of flower is a good start to the afternoon.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It do be strong as fuck tho.

Even flower is more potent than it was in the 70's. It's been widely cultivated specifically for higher THC. I remember when someone bred a 30% THC concentration strain was a big deal when I was still subscribed to High Times in the late 90's/early 2000's. Now 35% THC is pretty common in cheap weed at a dispensary.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

35%? For real? I never see anything higher than 22%ish.

I have heard of some places fudging the numbers because a lot of people just buy whatever has the highest THC%.

I'm sure it is getting stronger, because when there's money to be made, nature, it, uh, finds a way.

But this pastor was talking like a first timer could die by hitting a 90% vape. Total nonsense.

[–] bizarroland@fedia.io 2 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I would say that it is stronger.

I used to get trashy Mexican dirt weed as a teenager in a state that did not approve of it and apparently all of the heat of transport and terrible conditions and time between harvesting and actually making it to the consumer dramatically decreased the amount of THC and other turpenes in the weed.

I could smoke half a joint and be a decent amount of buzzed and enjoy my time with my friends.

Now I can take like accidentally too large of a single puff and be blitzed out of my mind for like six fucking hours.

Of course, my tolerance has gone down dramatically because I do not frequently consume, but even with that this stuff is super strong in my opinion.

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Seems like your opinion on it is based around you not having a good contact back then. For example here in the UK I've never seen brick weed, the closest is Jamaican sess and that was very rare too.

Weed isn't that much stronger, people just have better access to good weed and people know how to grow it better. I was smoking what would be considered top shelf today, almost 20 years ago.

The one thing that has changed a lot is genetic diversity in regards to terpene expressions.

[–] bizarroland@fedia.io 1 points 11 minutes ago

Maybe, but at the same time there is a certain amount of strength I can tolerate and that I can enjoy and most of the stuff they sell today is well above that.

It's not as fun for me to get incredibly stoned. I just want the occasional light buzz.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

I miss those days. 😂 Up until a few years ago, I rarely smoked, but I had friends who smoked daily. Of course, when I was hanging out with them I would partake, and just like you said, I'd take one hit and be good for hours.

Takes a lot more than that now, but I quit drinking and lost a lot of weight, and spend less money.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 5 points 1 day ago

I've seen the actual PSA short film that Reefer Madness was based on, so I'm gonna have to go with literally everything in that entire film.

[–] voracitude@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That tribes in Africa smoke it before a battle because it causes psychosis. My dad used to smoke weed, so you'd think his own experience would have had him think twice about that one. But no, he's just a fucking idiot.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Alternatively, your dad is always ready for battle.

[–] Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“It doesn’t affect me.” - said by an actual adult human.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 3 points 19 hours ago (4 children)

First times are weird. Had a 25mg gummy and felt literally nothing, hours went by and nothing happened. Till a few days later I had a 25mg + a half of another one and yeah let's just say it worked that time.

[–] Ultraviolet@lemmy.world 1 points 40 minutes ago

Is my tolerance supernaturally low or something? A 5mg gummy is plenty, and 10mg is physically uncomfortable. Not complaining of course, low tolerance saves a lot of money.

[–] PraiseTheSoup@lemm.ee 2 points 1 hour ago

Edibles are just inconsistent. Even the ones you get from the dispensary. There's no way they are guaranteeing that every individual piece of a batch has x amount of THC. That's why you get one that tastes like a fruit snack and the next one is like chewing on a bud. Couple that with unpredictable digestion and edibles are almost always a gamble.

[–] figjam@midwest.social 1 points 5 hours ago

This happened to me too. Smoked once in high school and decided it was a waste of money and didn't again for a long while. Took a gummy after it was made legal on a lark and was all "oh, I get it."

[–] Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

When I started smoking hash (30+ years ago) I thought it wasn’t very good… I think though that I quickly became too high to know I was high. Does that make sense? It was only after a week or two I realised how pickled I was getting.

I hope you enjoyed your second gummy experience…

I’ve heard a ton of dumb things about growing it. Everything from Epsom salts to birth control pills and classical music.

Turns out it actually grows like a weed as long as it gets plenty of sunlight, good quality soil, water, and fertilizer. The only real gotcha is that you need to identify and remove male plants before they release a bunch of pollen.

[–] Futtyklam@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Using a grinder gets rid of all the keif.

[–] Qkall@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago

PR's medical program is kinda shit. Good products but weird rules...

But to answer your question, the gateway drug thing... or all those movies with reefer madness

[–] EyIchFragDochNur@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That it is or could be a menace
