Halifax police say the death of a 19-year-old woman found dead last month inside a large oven at a Walmart in the city's west end is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play.

Halifax Regional Police offered a short update in a news release on the case Monday, but did not say how Kaur died, only that the death was not suspicious.

Walmart said last week the bakery oven was being removed from the store. Removing the oven had always been part of a standard remodel program being implemented across the country, the company said.

I see there is people in here who are not happy with people questioning the investigation the cops "concluded" that there was no foul play, yet disregard her fathers connection to the khalistan movement.

There is so much plausible and/or perceived foul play here that the police saying "no evidence of foul play" by one of the world's largest companies and releasing no other details of this young woman's death is not good enough.

I hope civil charges are pressed, because as far as I'm concerned more eyes and publicity are needed on this case.

"No evidence of foul play" just means there's no proof that anyone set out to kill her on purpose. It doesn't mean that there's no evidence of negligence, although the police may not think they have enough to bring criminal charges in that vein, either. The burden of proof in a criminal court is high, and there's no point in wasting the court's time if there isn't enough evidence to convict anyone.

Civil court has a much lower burden of proof, and I hope the victim's family sues Walmart's pants off, because it really does look like there was an issue either with the equipment or with employee training that contributed to this.

Yeah, teenagers just up and die and end up in ovens all the time, nothing weird about that at all /s

Maybe there's details that aren't being shared, and I suppose you can't really rule out an industrial accident, but HMMMMM

How to add absolutely nothing but conjecture to a conversation 101.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

The police have cried wolf, or failed to, far too many times.

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

While I appreciate the sentiment, I am sorry to say "Fuck the police 101" is down the hall.

[–] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 0 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

It's not controversial to say that police departments lie constantly, especially about minorities. I'm no anarkiddie, I just recognize this pattern.

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 3 points 17 hours ago

When did I say it was controversial? When did I say I didn't agree?

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone -4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If they're not releasing details then you've got to add something

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It is better to wait for information than it is to make shit up yourself and call it productive.

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sure, I guess I'm just deeply suspicious when a young minority dies while working at a Walmart and police rule out foul play without further comment

At this point I haven't even heard a cause of death. There's nothing to go on except for conjecture

Also I didn't make anything up. I stated my suspicions and allowed that it could be even be accidental.

But you have to admit it's weird to discover someone in an oven. Even if it's not foul play I want assurances that there's an investigation being made to determine how this happened and prevent it from happening in the future

Sure, I guess I’m just deeply suspicious when a young minority dies while working at a Walmart and police rule out foul play without further comment

Would you be as suspicious if it was a white teenager? Or is this just a virtue signal?

At this point I haven’t even heard a cause of death. There’s nothing to go on except for conjecture

Cause of death seems pretty apparent coupled with the lack of evidence demonstrating foul play. Plenty to go on that leads to more reasonable conclusions outside of foul play.

Also I didn’t make anything up. I stated my suspicions and allowed that it could be even be accidental.

Yeah, teenagers just up and die and end up in ovens all the time, nothing weird about that at all /s

Maybe there’s details that aren’t being shared, and I suppose you can’t really rule out an industrial accident, but HMMMMM

You stated no suspicions. You pointed to the fact that all the details aren't released, which is absolutely normal during investigations, and did your best Fox News impression of "just asking questions".

But you have to admit it’s weird to discover someone in an oven. Even if it’s not foul play I want assurances that there’s an investigation being made to determine how this happened and prevent it from happening in the future

"We acknowledge the public's interest in this case and that there are questions that may never have answers," said Cromwell. "Please be mindful of the damage public speculation can cause. This woman's loved ones are grieving."

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Would you be as suspicious if it was a white teenager?

You betcha. Exploitation is equal opportunity.

Cause of death seems pretty apparent

Now who's adding conjecture?

We're obviously not going to agree on this

[–] nik282000@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Exploitation is equal opportunity.

Uhhhh, you sure about that?

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 hours ago

Well, I guess it it can be disproportionate at times

But if you're a teenager with no money then the system doesn't care as long as it can extract value from you

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca -1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

You betcha. Exploitation is equal opportunity.

Sure, I guess I’m just deeply suspicious when a young minority dies while working at a Walmart and police rule out foul play without further comment

What made you feel the need to point out the victim being a minority, and telling the world how deeply suspicious you are because of that, in your original comment if ethnic background doesn't matter to you?

Now who’s adding conjecture?

"Opinion or judgment based on inconclusive or incomplete evidence; guesswork."

Not me. Especially when the whole sentence remains in context.

Cause of death seems pretty apparent coupled with the lack of evidence demonstrating foul play. Plenty to go on that leads to more reasonable conclusions outside of foul play.

Notice how I said the cause of death is apparent, and didn't try to speculate on what it could be even though the most likely cause is asphyxiation from being stuck in an oven that has been turned on.

Facts are someone died in an oven, and there is no evidence of foul play. Your morbid need to know more than that while not being personally connected to the family is a sickness.

We’re obviously not going to agree on this

What exactly do you want me to agree with you on?

[–] Bougie_Birdie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I'd like to be able to agree that nobody enjoys having their words twisted to suit others' agendas. There seems to be plenty of that going around from both parties, and if you feel I've done that to you then I apologize.

Mostly I'm frustrated here because I'm advocating for the victim. I hope she gets justice and this doesn't happen again - whatever it is that indeed happened. It's equally tragic no matter who it was or where they were from, but 19 is just too young to no longer be here.

Perhaps I'm showing my biases here, but I don't trust institutional monoliths like the police or Walmart. Once bitten, twice shy. The truth is we'll never know what happened because none of us were there.

I've left this discussion with the feeling that you're calling me racist and am out here trying to cause distress for the family. It's just so far off that mark that it goes beyond the pale.

I hope your day gets better.

I’d like to be able to agree that nobody enjoys having their words twisted to suit others’ agendas.

What does this have to do with the topic of adding conjecture needlessly to conversations?

Mostly I’m frustrated here because I’m advocating for the victim.

No you aren't.

Yeah, teenagers just up and die and end up in ovens all the time, nothing weird about that at all /s

Maybe there’s details that aren’t being shared, and I suppose you can’t really rule out an industrial accident, but HMMMMM

This is not "advocating for the victim". This is non sense that adds absolutely nothing to the conversation.

The truth is we’ll never know what happened because none of us were there.

At least you finally understand what I have been saying.

I’ve left this discussion with the feeling that you’re calling me racist and am out here trying to cause distress for the family. It’s just so far off that mark that it goes beyond the pale.

Allow me to confirm your feelings.

I am calling you a racist and saying your actions cause distress to victims. Because you are and they do.

I hope your day gets better.

What makes you think it isn't going good? Do you believe that some random with an ignorant opinion on a situation has the ability to destroy my whole day?

The ego on you is impressive. Unwarranted, but impressive.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org -2 points 23 hours ago

Bootlickers assume no foul play...

I am with you on this, sounds like another pig cover for the owner class.

God forbid they have to pay out money for killing a person🤡
