You can forget about legal weed for the next 50 years :/

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 38 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It will depend entirely on whether he thinks weed being criminalized will put more people who oppose him in prison than he will lose in support from people who smoke weed that support him. Just like Nixon.

That’s my guess anyway.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 39 points 6 days ago

You forgot option C) which is part of Fascism 101: selectively enforce the law to prosecute your political opponents, target minorities, and just have something to hang on people in general just in case.

"Coincidentally" that's how the War on Drugs™ always worked in the US.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Does he need supporters anymore? He will have all three branches of government working for him.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If you're going to start ignoring laws and stuff, that's when you need support the most.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Support from the people in power, not the people who voted for you.

It's not like the regime in East Germany had massive public support.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Where do you think the people in power get their power from?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

From being able to use force to stay in power. Again, the regime in East Germany did not have massive public support. Also, in every election in which he ran, Hitler got less than 50%. But he got into power because it was a plurality election.

Once you get into power, you don't need elections to stay in power when you're a dictator.

They also didn't have near instant communication accross the country. It's also one state, rather than a group of them.

There will be midterms, and politicians will think about them.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There will be midterms

Why are you assuming that, or that the midterms won't be anything but a sham?

I really suggest you read about what dictatorships are like because you don't seem to be aware.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If you think they can and will rig an election in 2 years, then why would you assume this past election wasn't already rigged?

Also if you think fascism is guaranteed, what are you doing commenting on Lemmy right now instead of moving your daughter and wife out of the US?

I just think doomerism is a self fulfilling prophecy. If you want to give up and let the fascists have everything they want, well that's your perogative I guess.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

why would you assume this past election wasn’t already rigged?

Because Trump didn't control all three branches of government.

Also if you think fascism is guaranteed, what are you doing commenting on Lemmy right now instead of moving your daughter and wife out of the US?

I'm literally doing that. I've made no secret of it at all. If you mean why am I not getting on a plane this second, Trump isn't president yet. You do know that, right? We have time to prepare.

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

Trump federally legalized "psychoactive hemp" with the 2018 farm bill.

Still, I'm ready to get Ruby Ridged if the feds come for my plants.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 19 points 6 days ago

he has been against it, then most recently for legalization.. he was most likely lying through his leaky diaper then, so i suspect he's gonna flip back no legalization, no reclassification, aggressive targeted enforcement, and trying to screw up states' own legalization efforts.

his accomplices have been working on stopping the reclassification already.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

Cannabis is still Schedule I and Trump can't un-pardon people.

[–] overload@sopuli.xyz 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Democrats want it and it might help people that he doesnt know if legalised, so he'll be against it.

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 4 points 6 days ago

His techbro and tweenosphere fans will be for it.

[–] UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Elon likes it, you good

[–] venusaur@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Elon smoked weed on the Joe Rogan show. It’ll stay legal.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 19 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Elon is rich.

This is America.

Your prediction is not a good one based on those two facts.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Right. Elon already breaks drug laws by consuming enough ketamine every week to tranquilize a horse.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

That's kind of like saying he takes enough feline insulin to treat feline diabetes.

[–] venusaur@lemmy.world -1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Joe Rogan and other celebs are making money on weed like sponsorships and branding. It’ll stay legal.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You say that as if they couldn't easily find other sponsors. Do not assume anything will stay legal under a dictatorship. Ask any former East German.

[–] Breadhax0r@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Rules for thee but not for me

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

You mean the plans to put it on the same classification level as ~~heroin~~ ketamine and lysergic acid*? A change Biden and the Dem establishment had 4 years to make?

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You mean the plans to put it on the same classification level as heroin? A change Biden and the Dem establishment had 4 years to make?

It’s already schedule I, the same as heroin.

The Biden admin’s plan, which is in progress and is being held up by the DEA who have been told many times over the years to reschedule cannabis, is to put it at schedule III, which would be the same as, say, ketamine. Able to be prescribed, able to be researched.

[–] NauticalNoodle@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I stand corrected, yet this hardly discounts any of my concerns about Biden's prior level of commitment.
