I fully support scalpers getting fucked.

I find it pretty telling that my kid and his friend where at home playing on the almost 20 year old ps3, with the ps5 right next to it.

To be fair they do fire up the 5 for that soccer game, but I have soo many games in the cabinet for the 3 that it is a goldmine for them

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 57 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Good games are good games regardless of when they’re made

[–] Quexotic@sh.itjust.works 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And in one sentence you've completely encapsulated the reason why Nintendo is terrified of emulators.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

And they still remake the same handful of games every couple years. We JUST got a new Mario Party that looks identical to the previous two. The only different ones are probably Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

I don't think I'll ever understand Nintendo fanboys that replay essentially the same shit with a slightly different skin on it.

[–] Toes@ani.social 6 points 1 week ago

(for the switch)

The first Mario Party felt like a scam. Such a rip-off.

The 2nd Mario Party felt like what it should have been all along.

The 3rd Mario Party should have been a free DLC for the 2nd game.

[–] Quexotic@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

Nostalgia is a strong force. Nintendo is very good at capitalizing on it.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago

Every single 3D Mario game has been a significant innovation over the previous one, except for Mario Galaxy 2

[–] PraiseTheSoup@lemm.ee 3 points 1 week ago

If this was the reason then they'd be trying to sell us these old games again...but they're not outside of their shitty subscription service that offers a few games that nobody wants.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Plus, if you can get the right model, you can play PS2 and PS1 games on it. That's a ridiculous library full of hidden gems.

[–] humancrayon@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

My launch day 60GB PS3 is still trucking along. Every few years I open it up, clean it out, and reapply thermal paste. It now has an SSD in it, and runs like a champ.

[–] steeznson@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

PS3 is probably the last gen to support a lot of local coop games

[–] Kelly@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Co-optimous has the best db of co-op features.

For couch co-op they list:

These numbers place the PS4 couch co-op library as larger than all the preceding PS generations combined. (At the moment you could group PS5 in with them too but that won't be true for long.)

Edit: thinking about this a bit more the interesting pattern is that each of PS2, PS3, and PS4 more than doubled their preceding generation's figure. We don't know how long the PS5 generation will stick around but we are probably half way though and its unlikely it reaches 2400 co-op titles.

Great site !

Mine play the heck out of the Wii U and the DS. I still am occasionally acquiring and playing a new Vita game almost yearly.

I now play my Steam Deck most of the time and the PS5 hardly gets touched.

[–] BruceTwarzen@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Wii U is the last console i bought and i still think it's such a great concept that failed for no real reason. Playing a game on the tv and having the mini map on the controller screen for example is so cool. They could've made so many completely different and new games. But i think it's just that no one really cared

[–] Quexotic@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

I think in that case Nintendo was more a victim of its own success and they released the console a little too early. Everyone was still playing wiis back then and there were still so many great games coming out on the Wii.

[–] BigTrout75@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

My Son likes the Wii 😂

"Lack of shortages"

Just say Surplus you weirdo. Who the heck wrote that headline?

[–] Squizzy@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

It makes sense in the context of how scalpers thrive. A surplus is normal, a shortage is what they rely on and the lack of these shortages has impacted them.

It also helps SEO when people search ps5 pro shortages.

[–] RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 week ago

You know who. ChatGPT.

[–] Dogs_cant_look_up@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago (3 children)
[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

Sounds like a clever way to avoid saying they're underselling.

[–] credo@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s too complicated to say “a surplus”.

[–] Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It makes sense given the context. The article is trying to distinguish between a surplus and a lack of shortage for 2 reasons.

  1. There were shortages worldwide for the ps5, and much of the issue was attributed to scalpers. So it is significant that there are no shortsges this time.

  2. Saying a surplus of ps5 pros means everyone can buy one, isn't really news without there being a reason that might not have been the case.

They are really short on shortages this year.

[–] Quexotic@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

An abundanceage?

[–] moosetwin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it might have no games but at least the scalpers are also losing

[–] Kelly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

This ones probably more current.

A steamdeck is a better deal!

[–] ahornsirup@feddit.org 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not always and not for everyone. If you want to output a decent quality image to a TV to play on the couch, then the Steam Deck isn't exactly a great choice because it can't really do that, it struggles to maintain playable framerates in modern games at its own native resolution, nevermind a TV's (either 1080p or increasingly often 4k). If all you play is older and/or indie games it might still work fine, but it's not a one size fits all.

[–] gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it struggles to maintain playable framerates in modern games at its own native resolution

I love people making blanket statements about the SD when it's a fucking PC: what settings are you talking here, because my SD handles games that came out this year no problem on medium settings native, some settings to low when I put it on my big living room TV

Its not going to replace a console perfectly but it absolutely can play almost anything that isn't an exclusive or designed to just not work on Linux (which you can get around too anyway)

[–] ahornsirup@feddit.org 0 points 1 week ago (2 children)

All I did was point out that no, the Steam Deck isn't the best deal for everyone. Chill.

But since I'm back here already, if you're trying to sell me the Steam Deck as a Playstation 5 Pro replacement I'd expect visual parity with at least the regular PS5, at comparable framerates. Which I know the Deck isn't capable of. It isn't a replacement for a stationary console or PC because that's not what it's designed to be. It's primarily a handheld, designed to compete with other handhelds.

And I wasn't going to go there but ease of use is also a major point in favour of the Playstation because you won't have to deal with "getting around" things, ever.

Different people have different use cases which are best served by different devices.

Understatement of the decade, IMO!

I’ve barely touched my Steam games library as it is, have just dived headfirst into emulating my retro game collection (PS1, 2, 3 & Portable); along with SNES predominantly - because fuck Nintendo.

[–] Mango@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago

Suck it "risk takers"!

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago

It's almost as if less people are going to buy it because this lineup as it is has been a sham without the 200$ increase

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

people are buying this shit?

[–] minibyte@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

No, there’s a surplus.

[–] EnderLaw@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

It's too damn expensive.

[–] AgentGrimstone@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Wonderful news

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

This reminds me it’s nearly time to get my next second-hand PS4 game.
