Me, who spent more on a guitar than on the current car I am driving.

Do guitarists have the same, "N + 1" that we bicyclists have? Seems likely.

It depends. G. A. S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is a serious condition, but we do not suffer equally. But suffer we all do. Be it instruments or accessories.

You don't understand, these 131 pedals are all part of my signature sound!

Worth it. Cars are an ongoing cost, and don't bring joy if you're not into them. I think you made the right choice, you chose joy.

It's because I have one in the garage right now. That three port header is unmistakable.

You know, I just reached my midlife and I swear this is true.

You can get on a motorcycle a lot cheaper than you might think, but it definitely helps to have some mechanical ability.

I've wanted a Ducati superbike my entire life. In my 20's I desperately wanted one. A couple weeks ago I realized I can easily afford one now. Unfortunately my wrists, neck, and back can't afford that seating position anymore.

There's a lot to be said for going fast on a slow bike.

I rode my neighbor's Harley the other day and I was so bored. I'll never understand slow heavy bikes. I mostly ride dual-sports now. They're wicked in the twisties.

The phrase that always comes to mind for me is "Oh, it's just a Harley." There's a huge world of other bikes out there that are way more interesting. I turned a friend on to sport touring bikes, now he's got two Kawasaki Councours and a Honda ST1100 (among other things).

Those are fun bikes! I've ridden both of them and enjoyed them, even when I was younger and all about crazy. I've been thinking about getting a Ducati Scrambler for a few years now. That isn't a sport touring, and not really related to your comment, I'm just sharing my thoughts. :)

What even is that? It looks like a beefed up Ducati Monster.

It's not worth it where I live. (Québec, Canada)

First of all, we have a national "auto insurance" where you can't sue someone in case of an accident. And the fees are paid through the license plate which is super expensive. And it's even more expensive for a motorcycle due to the risks. Regular insurance is also more expensive. So in the end it's not really worth it.

I've wanted a motorcycle for years, and occasionally start looking. Then I consider just how badly people drive around here, and that I'd likely end up as road sausage. But, getting older and closer to kicking the bucket anyway, so maybe just go ahead and enjoy some riding?

[–] Entropywins@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

I've put enough friends in the ground to know that street riding is highly effective at combating old age.

I started Warhammer at age 30. Now I'm approaching 40 and looking at guns.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I just started on Warhammer novels and I am so glad that my eyesight doesn't allow me to partake in the money sinkhole that is Warhammer miniatures.

[–] ByteOnBikes@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I was considering it in 2020 during the pandemic. Then a coworker showed me some of his figurines. Then more. Then his set. This his room. Then photos of his basement of terrain he's working on. Then he linked me to new sets he's buying. Then shared some resources to meet other people like him.

Yeah, imma enjoy this hobby from the sidelines without spending money.

Just about every hobby is some kind of money sink. One reason I stopped playing 40k was because of my distaste for how GW insists on only using their materials and how blatantly they just drill people's wallets.

But that's not the whole wargaming community! That's not even the whole 40k community. There's OnePageRules, for instance, which is a totally free and really good model-agnostic Warhammer ruleset. There are other games like Battletech that are much more accepting of kit-bashes and creative modeling. Lots of historical wargames are very open about that too (as long as you keep it accurate).

And, of course, investing a couple hundred in a decent UV printer both a) provides a whole new way to hobby and b) saves a SHITLOAD long-term.

I started with DnD miniatures when I was quitting drinking. That's pretty affordable and risk-free for starting out, and a lot of the models out there for like $5 apiece are really decent these days. A basic paint set and some dollar store brushes and you're good to go.

I'm very passionate about DIY hobbying ;)

Listen, you don't outgrow toys, they just get more expensive.
