Hello. I am considering getting either a Sailor Professional Gear Slim Fountain Pen Iris Nebula Special Edition or one of the new Diplomat Vipers in Blue. Has anyone had experience with Sailor and Diplomat pens? The Sailor has a 14kt gold nib and the Diplomat has a steel nib. I haven't had any experience writing with a gold nib and have only been using steel nibs. This will be my first "Luxury" buy after having used Lamy Safaris and TWSBI Diamond Minis exclusively. Any feedback/comments is appreciated.

Thank you.

For a moment there I thought the Viper was a capless! That would have been awesome. Still a nice looking pen though.

My experience of Sailor is that they make plasticy pens, but with very nice nibs. The Viper looks more substantial, but I've never used a Diplomat before.

I've never used a gold nib either.

It probably more depends on what you're looking for in a nib. Gold nibs typically have some kind of bounce to them. The Viper is a hooded steel nib so it'll probably be a much more stiff writing experience. But I've heard Diplomat nibs are pretty smooth writers. In my experience, Sailor nibs have some feedback and can "sing" on the page.

Thanks for the info. I opted for the Sailor and have been using it as my primary writer for a week now. I must say that it is a very different writing experience than my TWSBI Diamond (F) and the Schmidt #5s on my YStudio Brassing and TC pens. It really feels like I’m writing with a mechanical pencil. I enjoy it. I now have the Diplomat Viper in blue on back order.

One thing worth taking into account is that the Diplomat will be a much heavier pen than the Sailor. Whether that's a good or a bad thing will come down to your preferences, but searching around reveals the body of the Diplomat weighs 21g alone, versus 10g for the Sailor.
