Have you read the posts and technical information about the new network? It's about as anonymous as you're going to get without a network of only like a dozen people.
It is a closed source product by a advertising company. Google already collects a huge amount of data so using Google services framework isn't private and it is all closed source so it isn't open. Let me know when it works on AOSP.

Doesn't it depend entirely on FMD network? If so, then it shouldn't work better or worse than the other options since they all use the same restricted Google network

That said I'm getting these as soon as availability is better and hopefully uwb turns on.
About a year. It runs on a CR 2032, same as Air Tag.
And what's the network like? Are there many devices out there reporting the position of those tags? Or is it just Motorola devices with their 5% market share?
It runs on Google's Find My device network. All android smartphones which support the latest location reporting are supported. Though, how it works in practice can be different.
How do I check if I have the latest location reporting support? And then turn it off?
Launch the Find My Device app. Click your avatar and click find my device settings. You should network options and the granularity with to enable or disable the option.
I do not have that app. I thought it was baked into google services which I haven't 100% gotten rid of, still on OEM and not lineage or graphene.
Search the settings. Or install from play store for a convinient shortcut.
I thought that wasn't launched yet? Do they backport and enable that per default to compete with the mass of iPhones, or is it going to be a rare occurence that a tracker gets reported?

It's pretty obvious that the network isn't as robust as Apple's. I expect it'll improve.
Hopefully but probably not as it seems everyone online wants to disable or turn off the initial minimal setting.
I know that's the general sentiment for online discourse. I think it amounts to a rounding error in terms of total population. I'm confident it'll improve. Maybe never be better than airtags... But I expect better than now.

It should be compatible on most android smartphones running the latest version of play services. The default should work for lost smartphones and items in high traffic areas. So, tracking in low density areas may be spotty.

Theoretically good as it could use any android device with Google services installed - in practice not as good as airtags as Google made it opt-in and nobody ever changes default settings
I was listening to a podcast about a dad who puts air tags in his kids shoes when they go on vacation. And I love the idea.
But I'm extra concerned about privacy and life span. Is this one of those situations where it's like house cams where everything is transmitting to a foreign nation/government anyways just accept that for convenience?
Motorola's website claims:

That's nice. I already got some Chipolo on account of them being made in the EU. Being with AirTag accessories is a nice pro to this alternative.
