What a ride these two episodes were.

A few of my favorite moments:

  • Gillian (the whale!) piloting the ship through the wormhole
  • Wesley finally calling his mom, but then showing up behind her as a surprise
  • The tie-in to the Picard synth attach at the end where the crew reacts to seeing the Mars attack on the news
  • Janeway pushing to continue some scientific and humanitarian missions

I do have a question though. I have been getting "these two people seem to want to get together vibes" in between Chakotay and Janeway starting in the episode "Cracked Mirror". Was this just wishful thinking on my part?

Speaking of relationships, were holo-Janeway and the Doctor flirting?

Regarding Janeway and Chakotay, they had similar moments in Voyager, too. At first she was thinking she'd get back together with her fiance Mark. Then eventually she decides that since she's a captain on a small ship that's isolated from the rest of the federation, she shouldn't fraternize with the crew.

Also though, the two have a tight bond. Think about how long they've known each other, and what they went through together. I mean, she had her first officer infiltrate his ship after which they all got flung to the opposite side of the galaxy, and she made him the first officer. A lot of what we're seeing use just that these two care so much about each other, not necessarily romantically.

Agreed on all points.

Jellico's line about not being able to supply new combadges across the fleet was a pretty funny way to acknowledge the badge inconsistency with the "Picard" flashbacks - I'm going to try not to think about that too hard.

I'm disappointed that we'll never get a chance to see Elnor in one of the sailor suits the cadets wore on this show.

One thing that's going to bug me for a while is how Solum can progress peacefully without contradicting season one - Ilthuran isn't exactly on track to become the Diviner at this point.

Temporal Mechanics! ;-)

Unfortunately, this has bugged me more the more I've thought about it. I think it undercuts the urgency of the entire season, which repeatedly emphasized how important it was to send the Protostar through the wormhole and making things exactly the way they were in season one.

Except it's apparently fine for Solum to never have its disastrous civil war, and never train soldiers to go back in time, even though that was absolutely critical to the story.

It seems like an effort to have their cake and eat it, too. Even if you can make it work logically, I don't think it works thematically.

Protecting their reality (the prime timeline) from the Loom is the main source of urgency right? That's why they needed to get the Protostar to the right place, to protect the present.

Which creates the chilling thought that the "future" with Solum's civil war would be consumed by the Loom.

That’s why they needed to get the Protostar to the right place, to protect the present.

Right, but they've engineered a "present" in which Gwyn shouldn't exist, which is exactly what they spent the bulk of the season trying to avoid, down to her having to wear the armband to stabilize her.

IDK, at best I think it's way messier than he should be.

They confiscated the portal tech and shipped it away in crates marked classified and with the Daystrom Institute logo.

Wesley said Solum needed to invent that tech so that the Protostar could be sent back in time. So the Federation clearly didn't have anything like it yet.

What are the odds this is the precursor to the portal tech stolen and used by Vadic in Picard season 3?

[–] skfsh@startrek.website 2 points 4 months ago

Holy shit. All so that eventually all the young folks turn on the older officers on their ships. Wesley finally getting his revenge for the way he was treated growing up. He was playing this 4D chess all along

That space and time comment kind of rubbed me the wrong way. By the nature of planetary bodies and ships moving at incredible speeds things have to move through space anyway. Episode 19 at 11:54 had a minor animation mistake going on Bribble with some weird clipping. I'm glad that other Val N'Akat supported Gwyn in that climactic battle. It was starting to feel like the dad and the BBEG were the only ones on the planet between the time duplicates in the earlier episodes.

I felt the synergy between this show and Picard went a little stronger than needed. Especially considering the first season was a little weaker than the others. It also felt a little late.

I'm still looking forward to any sequel though. I like the hook of slightly unsanctioned exploring.

I really liked it, but then I think Picard's first season was the best one, and have been hoping we'd get another glimpse of just how game-changing the Romulan evacuation and subsequent events were. I never thought it'd be this show, though...
