Been trying to teach myself how to make a business website using Wordpress, because I can't really afford to pay someone thousands to do it for me. Thought it would be easy to figure out for someone with slightly above average IT skills, but it's really not. Now I realise why people pay professionals for Wordpress websites.
Using a theme as a base is the way to go for a beginner like me, but so many of the free themes on offer are so template-y looking with zero design flair. I'd start with a basic theme thinking I could make it look good, only to realise that I can't and the customisation level is so limited (or I can't figure out how to make larger customisations).
Now after days of searching, I've found a nice looking theme that seems user friendly to work with. Starting all over again with customising it. Hope this one works.
You can use a plugin like Elementor or Visual Composer to jazz up your layout. Inside Wordpress you can change colours and a bit of the appearance, but you're limited to blog style text block layouts unless you know how to go deep with HTML and CSS.
Plugins let you make those nice landing pages where you can really make a website your own.
Oh this is helpful, I’ll try out Elementor. I’ve been going to the website view inside Wordpress, clicking edit header / edit page and trying to make changes that way. But it’s really limited in what I can change. Any layout change with a theme block is basically a no go, so I’ve been trying to find a theme with the best layout possible that I don’t need to fiddle around with too much.
That's where plugins like Elementor are great. They work with any theme so you can find one you like, and use Elementor to actually build your pages.
