You would be screwed if your bulb goes out.

The turn signal mechanism would still work even if the bulb was out.

This is still not really workable, but that wouldn't be the problem.

Does it though? I had a truck in the 90s and the signal seemed to be a circuit. So, when my rear left signal went out, the front left didn’t work either.

Yeah, all my older cars worked like the truck you mentioned. It wouldn't click or do anything if the bulb was out. That was handy for knowing it needed replacing I suppose.
