World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I mean... Russia is bad. It invaded its neighbor twice, it makes being queer illegal, Putin critics keep "mysteriously" dying, the media is all state-owned meaning it only reports what Putin wants reported, the elections are fraudulent affairs...
But apparently they have fresh bread in supermarkets in Russia. So says Tucker Carlson. So it's not all bad.
Just out of curiosity, when did westerners started to have a problem with invading other countries? I ask just because of the fact that in the last 100 years you were always either the invader or sided with the invader. And now its all wrong. Could you care to point when this change happened?
Ah, yes. The famously singular "westerners" who all 100% agreed with every foreign affairs policy of their government over the past century.
Are you saying that because Western countries have done bad things it means that Russia isn't doing a bad thing when it does it too?
No, what i did was ask you a question, wich you did not answer
The "?" at the end of the very first phrase indicates a question
Well it was a stupid question:
I've always had a problem with invading other countries. Why do you think I don't? I was working in a protest camp against the 1991 Iraq War when I was in middle school. I marched against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in massive antiwar marches in Los Angeles. I have been protesting against Israel's invasion of Gaza since it began.
I have the same problem with Russia invading Ukraine as I did with the U.S. invading Iraq.
Any other stupid questions?
A people and it's government are two different things. And frequently the government does not give accurate representation of its people's desires.
But let's say the USA, because I assume that's what you are insinuating by westerners, is 100x more evil than all other countries combined. Does that mean the Russian government isn't bad? Nope. Truth doesn't change based on the moral character of another separate unrelated entity. Even if that entity is worse and even if that worse entity is the one saying the truth.
I'm not a fan of the US, its imperialism, and its geopolitical meddling but even I have to admit that the last time they annexed something was in 1900, Hawaii. Two years earlier, Puerto Rico (from Spain).
So why are you not protesting the ongoing occupation of south korea or japan?
You do know that South Korea and Japan want those bases there, right? They don't have to allow them. They are a huge boon to the local economies.
They may be there because of a war, but they remain there because the people in those sovereign nations want them there.
You know what military the sovereign nation of Ukraine doesn't want on its soil? The Russian military.
Lots of crayons eaten to puke this, i imagine
I would advise you not to violate our civility rule again.
Now-
Can you show any evidence whatsoever that the governments of South Korea and Japan are being forced to keep American military bases there?
Can you show any evidence whatsoever that their presence has been a net negative on either nation?
Can you show any evidence that the nation of Ukraine does want Russia's military on its soil?
Sorry i tend to respond badly to stupidity. Wont happen again.
The mental gymnastics involved in beliving the japanese people wants troops from the country who nuclealy nuked them for no reason other than showing power to a third country is really out of my mental grasp. Maybe one day i will consume so much propaganda that i will be smart enough to understand things like that.
And that would be the second violation after a warning. Time for a break.
How is that breaking civility rules but your post right here is fine? https://lemmy.world/comment/10541760
Saying a question is stupid is not uncivil. Saying a person is stupid is uncivil.
And asking why all Westerners are okay with invasions except when Russia does it is a stupid question because it's obviously not true based on anyone who has paid attention to protests in Western countries when those countries invade other countries.
And if you really have an issue with that, you are free to take it up with lemmy.world admins.
I’m just saying this feels like a “who watches the watchmen” type of deal. You’re like the biggest power user on this website and I see you bickering with people in the comments of every post with more than 30 replies.
That’s kind of a poor response, no? You’re happy to contribute more written material than Stephen King on a good day but you don’t want to talk about your tendency to pick fights?
No, I am not interested in the fight you are trying to pick with me.
You know what to do if you have an issue with my moderation.
Because neither of those are forced imperialist occupations.
