Keep predators away (and there are a lot of those), make sure they have food and water, and beyond that they do a very good job of looking after themselves.

They live 4-10 years depending on various factors.

I can barely remember to feed and water myself, predators are drawn to my curvy boyish figure. Chickens would be screwed.
