Der Schock kam im Labor: Forschende des Schweizer Paul Scherrer Instituts (PSI) bemerkten bei der Analyse eines Eiskerns, den sie aus einem 4100 Meter hohen Gletscher gebohrt hatten, dass nicht mehr alle erwarteten Informationen darin gespeichert waren. Die zunehmenden Temperaturen hatten einem der höchstgelegenen Alpengletschern, dem Corbassière-Gletscher des Grand Combin im Schweizer Kanton Wallis, so zugesetzt, dass er als Klimaarchiv unbrauchbar geworden war. Der Verlust der sensiblen Daten kam überraschend für die Fachleute, die mit einer solch raschen Zerstörung nicht gerechnet hatten.

If we did another, you cut that in half, we would have, yet again, half of that. But the headlines are always core sampling.

Core sampling is a good thing, but it has also served as fodder for the fake news to report climate cange. If the U.S. didn't sample cores for climate change, then you wouldn't have all the headlines."
