I'm excited for flying mount updrafts and adventures but a little worried that mounting in combat will be awkward for the game.

There must be some new reason they want us to be able to get on a flying mount in combat but it's odd that this doesn't extend to other mounts and I also wonder if it will remove flavor from other parts of the game by making the choice to get into combat a bit more trivial. I'm just not sure about that one until I get my hands on it.

Right now if you choose to solo a champ or low man a group event there can be a trade off by choosing to disengage. That's totally gone if you can decide to fly away whenever you want.

I think there's not much of a difference, dying doesn't inflict anything besides wasting a little time. If you use the combination of skyscale and other mounts, like the gryphon, you can quickly cross the map in a few seconds.

Allowing the player to waste a little less time could be seen as a quality of life improvement, which will push other people to also unlock the skyscale (I hate that lengthy quest line and the time gates).

There will be flying kryptis, so they can put you in combat, or they can be part of other events, for example metas. Some metas might have sections where you have to fly and kill some of them
