There are a couple of communities I've come across on online lists / forums that I'd like to join, but they aren't showing up on a search despite the usual workarounds. I suspect they might just be hosted on instances we aren't currently federated with, but is there a way to check this so I know if this is the case or if it's due to a bug?

If you are using the format !community@instance it should trigger a instance Federation if we are not already federated and then sync the community.
Which communities were you having trouble with?

I was actually surprised to find out that we’re federated with exploding-heads. Most instances will just immediately defederate from them.

Honestly, the biggest problems are not those "heated" instances (currently) it's random instances that get new users signing up and then those users end up spamming random communities with spam.
I then have to deal with all the reports from them.
