So I guess the question is why arrange the keys like that? What benefits do you get by splitting the letters down the middle like that?

As far as having those columns between the keys, probably slightly more ergonomic/comfortable
Yes it's to keep my wrists a bit further apart but also to give my pinky fingers less work to do.
This. I ended up removing the middle and lower corner switches to get down to 34 keys.

Slightly better ergonomics, mostly. Kinda forces you into better typing habits overall also since its harder to be tempted to reach too far with one hand to hit the keys the other hand is responsible for.
I suppose splitting them puts leas strain on your wrists. I find with my preonic that my wrists are angled in, but I suppose thats the same as any keyboard. Not sure what this key layout is though.
