ok i need a new bed and mattress - is Ikea the way to go or are there other options? Don't want to spend much, about $400- $500 in total, any recs?

Very low budget. Have you looked at koala ? They are pretty cheap.
Thx for the suggestion, but Koala is coming up to $1500 mattress + bed! :(

I've had that for 4 years but I'm also someone who happily sleeps on anything from air mattress to particle board and be reasonably fine the next day (I have the equivalent of that mattress. Mine has been discontinued.)
I tried four beds that had 100 day trial periods. It didn’t cost a cent and I’m pretty much an expert on mattresses in a box now..
