The Very Strange and Unusual Burrowing Owl
More facts:
Also called the Howdy Owl, as it nods its head at passers-by as if getting then hello.
They don't normally dig their burrows. They take over old ground squirrel (woodchuck, prairie dog, etc) nests, but they will use their feet and beaks to maintain the structure.
It has a higher tolerance to carbon dioxide than other birds, allowing it to live underground with poor ventilation.
They will store extra food in their burrows.
With their long legs, they will also hunt on foot as well as from the air.
They will make rattlesnake noises in there burrows when threatened to make issues think they're at a snake den.
