Blocking one user prevents me from seeing comments below theirs, even if they are to me (mtgzone.com)

Say I am interacting with user abc in a comment chain. If they start acting incendiary and I block them, I can no longer see abc's comments. This would be fine, except... if user xyz responds to one of my comments in that comment chain, I have no way of interacting with that. Want to reply? Want to block them, too? Too bad, the entire chain is invisible (but you're still notified about xyz's comment, which you can do nothing about).

Maybe instead of making abc's comments invisible, they could be replaced by a comment box with "blocked user" instead, so the rest of the comment chain remains intact?

I'm also a Connect user, and I feel like it's always an imperfect balance for how blocking is implented, on any platform.

Like, what if the person you blocked subsequently comments on your response in the thread to the person you didn't, and the person you didn't then responds and it's going back and forth...

If the blocked person was simply marked as [blocked] You'd see literally half a conversation, and end up needing to unblock the person anyway to even understand what's going on with the other user who wasn't blocked.

The other interpretation of blocking someone is that you never want to see, hear or engage with that person ever again, not even seeing '[blocked]' - they are essentially invisible to you as if they simply don't exist, and so any comment thread they participate in is invisible at and after the point of their involvement.

So yeah. Do you 'soft' block someone and still risk having to see they exist, or do you fully block them, and risk the rare chance of missing out on content because of it? Opinions will vary.
