Things are better. And when you hear Irish people criticise the British, we are mostly referring to the government. In fact, some British citizens abandoned relatively comfortable lives in the empire to fight for Irish independence. Eg, Countess Constance Marievicz. That said, there is still a way to go. It seems to be a constant regardless of nationality. Many “Irish” Americans have pulled the ladder up behind them too and oppress minorities, support the worst kind of politics etc. Given Irish history (and their claims to that identity) they should know better.
