Me too. I actually paid for it as it was so great for route planning.

Everything gets bought up and chewed out. I’d love to see an open sourced version that anyone can use, similar to lemmy various front end clients.

Well, Komoot essentially is the frontend client. For an open source version, you have plenty of data sources for maps, weather, etc., for example OpenStreetMap. The challenge is integrating that into a present user experience. Open source efforts should therefore focus on that. The "backend" part already exists.
