You can do what you want for your goal, but to me, if you're using original hardware then modding it to look better than it did doesn't make it original hardware anymore.
It's like the question, if you have a car, and you replace every part of the car, is it still the original car?
Of course, the Ship of Theseus. Except that I haven't replaced anything. I've only added and improved. The FlippyDrive doesn't stop the disc drive from functioning and doesn't replace it outright. The Retro Gem doesn't have to replace the digital/analog out, it can be installed along side them. Both are adding additional functionality while maintaining the device's original use.
I knew it was a ship, but I said car because I thought ship was wrong, ha
