He thinks to himself "Yes, someone willing to kill me would certainly not shoot me in the head if my child was near there," not thinking about the fact that many vital organs are below the child.
Kid might get hurt in the fall but to make an omelet and all that.
If you think he's carrying his child as a meat shield but doesn't have a bulletproof vest on you're sorely mistaken - still I'm sure the kid has to go to school or the bathroom at some point..
