How can this be FOSS, or for that matter even legal, if Super Mario Bros is a proprietary game?
It's a reimplementation from scratch using GB studio.
But since it uses Mario, it might violate Nintendo IP. It's the case with many hacks. It doesn't make it non-FOSS.
It can't be both a port and a reimplementation from scratch, those two concepts are mutually exclusive.

Huh, I assumed it would be one of the decompile projects where you bring your own ROM to get the assets, but it looks like there are just ready-made ROMs right there on GitHub. Don't expect that to be around for long!

Interesting, then I'd say calling it a port is doing it a disservice if it's a full remake!

The author calls it "demake". I guess it's fair due to GBC decreased resolution... But it adds so many features, I would call it "remake".
